The Migraine Trust is the health and medical research charity for migraine in the United Kingdom. The Migraine Trust is committed to supporting all those affected by migraine, promoting research, improving diagnosis and treatment, providing information and raising awareness of migraine as a significant public health problem.
Did you know that there are 8 million people in the UK alone that suffer from migraine and that most people who get migraine are aged 20-50?
The World Health Organisation has rated migraine among the 20 most disabling lifetime conditions, which costs the UK over £3 billion per year in lost working hours and doctors’ visits.
Of those who suffer from this disabling condition it is estimated that between 10-20% of migraine sufferers are unable to work due to their migraine. Migraine sufferers are considered to have a lower quality of life than people with asthma. Despite the prevalence of migraine in the UK it very much remains an invisible condition with the sufferer often remaining isolated and the condition not being treated seriously by others.
Migraine is a condition of recurring headaches (headaches that happen again and again). The headaches may be linked with other symptoms, such as sensitivity to light and noise, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and eyesight changes. People who suffer from migraine have an unusually sensitive nervous system that is particularly sensitive to change. In migraine sufferers, changes which many people do not notice cause painful, recurring headaches. A migraine attack can last up to five days from beginning to end which can include a period of up to 72 hours of a throbbing headache. The average frequency of attacks is one a month, but over 17% of sufferers have more than forty attacks a year.
The Migraine Trust:
