Sometimes all it takes is a little synergy to get something off the ground. With the Millstones, that jump start came when Mick Rhodes burned Randy Weeks' "Sold Out at the Cinema" disc (sorry Randy!) for Jake Smith. Rhodes, a guitarist/singer/songwriter, had been raving about Weeks' legendary Sat. night shows at Culver City, CA's Cinema Bar for years, with many converts. Smith, a multi-instrumentalist and producer (he plays drums for the Millstones), and a member of another band with Rhodes, "Los Geezer Riot," was floored by Weeks' "... Cinema" disc. "Let's start a band like that," was what he said, in fact. Rhodes had been stockpiling songs for months, with the hope of getting a roots based band started, so this was all he needed to hear. A week later, he called guitarist Greg Durschlag, of legendary LA proto punks The Weasels, and secured a lead six-stringer. A call to bass monster Doug Baker sealed the deal, and the Millstones were hatched in March 2005, with songs by Rhodes and Smith.
