New Girls in Town
by Brian Barney (Shepherd Express)
July 19, 2007
Made up of Brewcity Bruisers and former members of The Skexies, Milwaukee's newest all-girl act, The Barrettes, are burning down stages around town. Their sound is a cross between a lo-fi T. Rex and early B-52s, with guitar, cello, drums and melodica (a hand-held mouth organ) colliding for music that banters between chaotic and traditional rock. While there's an undeniable punk edge, the up-beat swing in songs like "Dogs Out at 3" showcases a danceable vibe so accessible you wouldn't think twice if you heard it on the radio.
Location: Ladyfest Lansing Michigan. When: Summer of 2004. Situation: an already very happy JoAnn Riedl stumbled up to singer/guitarist Joey and drummer Joolz at the merch table in a local venue and proclaimed, “Damn, I missed you guys. I’m so sorry; I’m moving to Milwaukee in a few days and really wanted to see you. I’m out of money, but can I have a CD?” So the deal was set. A free CD was given with a promise of a cover at the next Milwaukee show. Expecting little, Joolz and Joey were shocked to find JoAnn front and center at the next Skexies show at Points East Pub. From that point on, D.I.Y. singer/songwriter JoAnn and her band shared the stage with the Skexies on a regular basis. After the bass player of the 3-piece Skexies moved away, Joolz and Joey had a decision to make: find a new bass player or start a new project. The proposition was made and JoAnn began experimenting with the former Skexies. It didn’t take long to realize they created a different style of music; one that all parties agreed was a great fit. The only thing missing was the low end. Not interested in the typical arrangements (JoAnn and Joey both switch between guitar and distorted ukulele and mandolin, respectfully) they decided to hunt for a cellist. Critter, a jammer for the Shevil Knevils, rolled in to complete The Barrettes. These four hooligans feed off of the quick beats, quirky riffs and at times circesque vibes (undoubtedly due to the melodica) their songs possess, and so do their fans. New ladies on the scene, The Barrettes have already played to several chock-a-block local establishments including the Cactus Club, Stonefly, Rock Bottom and Points East Pub.
There is currently a search for two types of bands for record label consideration.
