Invariably when you go to see a band in the local pub they are either absolutely terrible, or a carbon copy of whichever bands that they are tying to emulate. In the latter case, the bar staff might as well have put on a CD and turned the volume to max for all the difference there is in the sound. Fortunately, this is not the case with The Minders. The Fife Four piece manages to play well known songs while still giving each and every one their own unique twist. Whether it is upping the tempo or altering the baseline each tune is subtly different to the polished studio output of the original and that is what sets this band apart. Another attribute is that they never let their bassist slip into the background. Les Main even seems at times to be the most prominent person, depending on what song is being performed. . The sets are as varied as the band members themselves. They jump from the 60s with the Stone's Jumping Jack Flash right up to the present day with songs from Razorlight, The Dandy Warhols and Feeder. They even manage to squeeze in tunes from the intervening years. It says a lot for this group that they can play one of my all time favourite songs and not be a let down for me. Vocalist Stevie Watt never lets the music get the better of him and gives out a strong vocal performance throughout the night and is able to sing like a less hirsute Marc Bolan as easily as he is able to imitate Billie Joe Armstrong. Both sets are extremely upbeat and all the songs have a sing-along factor. Indeed so popular were the Minders that by halfway through the second set, they had much of the audience, quite literally, dancing on the tables. The songs are varied enough to give an older audience their Teenage Kicks while, at the same time allowing them to attract and retain younger audience members. Once they start to actually listen then often the youngsters start asking who was originally responsible for a particular song and hopefully realise that Dad’s record collection is not as dire as they previously thought. Kirsty Topping FFP 06 THE MINDERS PLAY FENDER, GIBSON, MAPEX, SABIAN, SHURE, MARSHALL, PEAVEY, ASHDOWN.
