Shudder To Think...
The Missing Planes came into existence in 2002 in the cramped back room of an apartment on Buffalo’s west side. Conceived as nothing more than a way for two friends to get together, have fun, and work on some songs guitarist and vocalist Michele Buono was writing, the material took on a life of its own almost immediately.
What began as a low-key acoustic project in theory turned into a full-blown electric assault when Buono and drummer Matt Barber moved to a practice space in one of Buffalo’s abundant abandoned warehouses later that year. Both were metal kids woken up by punk and indie bands of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, so the natural escalation in volume wasn’t shocking to anyone who knew them. What was surprising to some--including the band members themselves—was their dedication to improving, aspiring to reach the heights of bands that had impacted them so profoundly, like Fugazi, Jawbox, The Spinanes, and Versus.
Since then The Missing Planes have opened shows in their hometown for Calvin Johnson, Jucifer, Jason Loewenstein of Sebadoh, +/-, Wolf Colonel, 50 Foot Wave (featuring Kristin Hersh), The Fontaine Toups, Ill Lit, Victory At Sea, and The Butchies, among others. The Buffalo News said the Planes “bring a new twist to the guitar/drums duo concept”, and described them as “a band worth keeping an eye on.”
In August of 2004 The Missing Planes traveled to Brooklyn to record six new songs at Fireproof Recording with Adam Lasus behind the board and James Baluyut (of +/- and Versus fame) producing. The result, In Honor Of Your Departure, was released on Blackbook Records in April of 2005.
In the Fall of 2005 the Planes became a power trio with the addition of old friend and Georgia Tucker band mate Tommy Stanford (girlpope, dai atlas) on bass and guitar. The reaction at shows has been overwhelmingly positive.
