THEM NOVUS was formed in Riverside, California, in early 2007. As destiny would have it, Johnny Gomez and Henry Rodriguez were in a dilemma not unfamiliar to most new bands: They needed a lead singer. Trial and error put them through agonizing auditions with talented but chemically incompatible musicians. Meanwhile, less than twenty miles away, Devin Vasquez had just returned home from touring the world with major international acts. Yet, she wasn’t satisfied. It was then that the tides turned and the planets lined up in our favor. Through a friend of a friend, they were united and THEM NOVUS was born. The band’s first assignment was to embrace and rehearse a few cover songs for a birthday party. This turned out to be THEM NOVUS’ first professional performance. Along with covers such as Rufus’ “Sweet Thing” and James Brown’s “Sex Machine”, it was at that performance that their first born, “Hear It”, was debuted. Rick, if you’re reading this, thank you. Immediately, the artistic juices began flowing between Devin and johnnyG (who wrote “Hear It” hanging out after rehearsal one night), and that chemistry still flows to this day. Along with groove maestro Henry Rodriguez, THEM NOVUS has recorded and performed a very intimate and heart felt set of songs with a very peculiar and distinctive sound and feel. The band draws from various styles influenced by The Police, Dave Matthews Band, Jamiroquai, Incubus, and a few more. Recently, the band has released their debut album “GREEN LIGHT”. A dozen songs, a dash of frustration, plenty of perspiration and even more inspiration are just a few of the ingredients in this 100% home made sonic treat. The CD is available on-line at MySpace, CDBaby, and WWW.THEMNOVUS.COM as well as all TN performances. With the support of the fans, THEM NOVUS is striving for longevity, creativity, and ingenuity. Like they say at the Grammy’s “Without you, this would not be possible”. We’ll see you there. STAY TUNED! ![]() Buy Album Here! Yes, yes, yes. 7 months in the making, 3 engineering re-makes and a lot of studio time, but it is finally here. Let us tell you about it. (If we made this intro too long, we beg you to bare our enthusiasm.) THE TITLE GREEN LIGHT. Like the song tells it, "...pulling up, here we go, got the Green Light...". Self explanatory we hope. A lot of "feel good" lyrics, fresh grooves and a very sincere pulse of what we all felt at the moment. Funk, pop, rock, hip pop/reggae and even a little bit of jazz. We are very proud of the results, like every band with their "first born". We hope you embrace it. THE COVER SONG We included a very personal version of MATISYAHU's "King Without A Crown." It is an honor to render our version of such a great song. Thanks to Matthew Miller and Josh D Werner for authoring such a great tune. Facing the task of re-arranging an already great song became a personal challenge for us. When we were done, we felt we achieved a very modest milestone in our writing phase of the project. Hope you agree. And to MATISYAHU, if you ever happen to listen to it, for whatever outrageous, unthinkable, crazy reason, please give us your feedback. Thanks again. THE SESSIONS All tracks were recorded @ our own MY WAY Studio. Not a fully commercial setup, but not a basic home recording setup either. We had the privilege of recording all our vocals with a vintage AKG C12 mic. You can definitely hear it, I hope. Fender Strats, Gibson Les Paul, Henry's self-made drum set, Roland DR-880, Roland VS-2480CD and a bunch of Shure SM-57's, AKG Condenser. johnnyG handled all guitar tracks; doubling as orchestrator, producer, engineer, and all technical tasks. Not too bad for the first time (at least we like to think so). Henry Rodriguez with all the tight grooves and most of the laughs. Oh yeah, and the back up vocals on My Way. And finally the incredibly talented and soothing Devin Vasquez with all lead vocals and back up vocals. Very spontaneous, fresh and original. WOW! girl. We love her. Some behind the scene facts; We thought you would like to know that the percussion on "Your Song" was created by johnnyG and Devin kicking a plastic storage bucket that happened to be laying around the studio floor. Also, the intro on "Conquer" was a one mic accident. After the fact, we thought it sounded cool so we didn't fix it.
