About me:
MODERN M’AGE Foundation Our Mission Our program mission is to build esteem, provide guidance, and help develop young entrepreneurs in our disadvantage youth program, MODERN M’AGE. Getting their attention while they are still young and impressionable is necessary because they are pure and coach able at this point. Creating quality events that highlight the professional talents of the Bay Area’s Hair and Fashion industries is an outlet that will build confidence and skill amongst our youth. As an industry professional herself, Ms. Khia Payne has seen the talents that are displayed by inner city disadvantaged youth who lack the funding for being properly trained and educated in their desired craft, Cosmetology. The lack of education, guidance and knowledge ultimately leads to improper business handling, loss dreams and destructive futures. Overall the long-term results are damaging. A Situation of Loss Potential The lost potential of youth from disadvantaged situations is something that this society can not afford. Many of them are at-risk of falling victim to social and economic influences that hinder their ability pursue their dreams and aspirations. The sense of disenfranchisement that can be associated with the economic and social disadvantaged adults is also a contributing factor to the unfulfilled potential in some of our youth. It is important that the community promote youth assets through opportunities for self- empowerment, including involvement in positive decision-making and community service activities. Providing economic opportunity through employment and education can also contribute to helping youth rise above their life struggles, and fulfill their potential. It is of our opinion that this problem will yield to combined efforts of the public, private institutions, non-profits and civic organizations. The challenge is to ensure that a variety of intervention methods and resources are tightly integrated and mutually supportive. The Program What we hope to accomplish with our program is the development of more skilled, educated and trained underprivileged young men and women (stylist, make-up artist, photographers and models). With our focus on young women, we do not exclude young men who are interested in the industry as well as the program. We have a strategic program process that is duplicated every 6 months. Modern M’age programs will properly train and advance the skill levels of the young men and women in the program, ultimately resulting in business development and overall growth. We accomplish this by structured and personalized guidance & mentoring working with high school juniors and seniors ages 16 to 18 that show and interest in Cosmetology. We also work with youth that currently attend Cosmetology School and Barber College. In addition to professional training, we offer business development and creative skill training for those program participants (ages 19 to 23) who show an interest in starting their own business. Modern M’age will collaborate with some of the industries top professionals to provide extended training. Modern M’age will also offer workshops for the high school junior and seniors throughout the year. These individuals must be interested in becoming hairstylists, make-up artist and other industry based trades. One seminar will focus on business development (owning and operating your own salon). The second Seminar will focus on the creative aspect of working in the beauty industry (styling, creative designing and Make-Up artistry). Modern M’age will coordinate with publications such as Flawless Hair Dezigns, The Magazine to highlight and display the works of our future cosmetologist. Throughout the year our youth will have the chance to work exclusively with the Bay Area Hair and Fashion publication. Flawless Hair Dezigns, The Magazine has offered internships (via Modern M’age) in various departments such as Make Up artistry, Fashion styling, Hair styling and Photography. The internships will help develop the skill levels of our youth by allowing them hands on training. DEMOGRAPHICS Female 82% Male 18% 16-18 years 50% 19-23 Years Old 50% (The above are approximate percentages that and are based on averages) Acceptance into the Program Modern M’age representatives will visit local high schools and trade colleges during their careers days. The representatives consist of cosmetologist, make-up artist and salon owners. They will speak on their individual experiences in the industry, and will also explain our program in detail.   Each interested student will be required to write an essay on why they want to attend cosmetology school and why they deserve the Modern M’age scholarship award. Modern M’age has recently teamed up with Ms. Khia Payne’s Alma Mater Berkeley High School and Ms. Flora Russ (teacher and founder of the Arts & Computer Academy). This is just one of the programs we have decided to work with. This group of students will be a primary target because they are the most at risk and have proven to excel once they are given individual guidance and attention.
