Album review on Whisperin & Hollerin  (view more)

   About The Molenes
The reviews are coming in:

"There’s nothing at all wrong with reveling in whiskey, beer, bitter women, and sweet heartache, as long as the guitars are hot, the backbeat’s driving, and no one expects me to feel an ounce of sympathy. Dave Hunter and his Molenes know this well, and their second album, Songs of Sin and Redemption, shows they’re more than just a guitar band... This 12-tune collection represents a tremendous upgrade over The Molenes debut and establishes them as one of New England's premier alt-country/Americana bands. If you get a chance to see them, take advantage of it." -Sam Pfeifle, Portland Phoenix.

"With the thematically dark subject matter, Hunter's smooth vocals and some graceful guitar work, Songs of Sin and Redemption seems to be presenting The Molenes as one of the Seacoast's more compelling and most promising Americana acts." Jamie Perkins, Portsmouth Herald Spotlight magazine. Read the full review, along with Chris Elliott's feature on the band in the Herald.

The Molenes second full-length album, Songs of Sin and Redemption, is available now from CD BABY. Also now live and available for purchase from iTunes, with other digital outlets coming online soon.

We have now posted five full tracks for you to check out, and will have other samples up soon on our official web site.

"Rock'n'roll with twang..." is the way The Molenes themselves will generally describe their music when pressed, but sometimes hearing the word elsewhere cuts more to the heart of it.

"Every once in a while a great record will come along with so little fanfare, you'd almost think the artist was intentionally masking its release to keep the beauty all to themselves... 'This Car Is Big' is a melding of rockabilly, country, gospel and roots. More descriptively, it's pure grease monkey rock armed with turquoise tail fins and Vaseline hair-dos. It bears the innocence of Whiskeytown's 'Faithless Street,' the wide-swing tremolo of X's 'Los Angeles,' and the simplicity of Springsteen's 'Nebraska,' complete with haunting harmonicas and earthquake whammy bar groans." –Martin England, Herald Spotlight

"This is a solid dose of top down, windows open, dirt road kind of Americana. The best thing about this disc is that you can hum along to most of the songs after just one listen, but each subsequent spin reveals more than was initially apparent. There's an appealing twang to the guitars of Dave Hunter and Tom Ferry, and Dave's voice has an appropriate worn-in feel... This is unquestionably a winner." -Kevin Finn, The Noise (Boston)

"The Seacoast Scene can lay claim to a hotbed of roots rock, so when two of its leading members agree on the next big band, you might want to pay attention." –Sam Pfeifle, Portland Phoenix

(Full Spotlight review here.)

The Molenes is the brainchild of Dave Hunter (vocals/guitars/songs), a midwestern native who eventually found his way to the Northeastern seacoast via London, England, to hook up with Andrew Russell (bass & vocals), Zach Field (drums), and Cartwright Thompson (pedal-steel guitar), and other occasional guests. The band's debut full-length CD, This Car Is Big, was released Sept 26 2006, and their latest, Songs of Sin and Redemption, came out May 6 2008. You can purchase the CDs from CD Baby or walk into Bull Moose Music stores in the Northeast to take it away. Also available from iTunes , and other digital outlets. The Molenes have been named a "River Rising Star" by WXRV 92.5 The River, and have been played on rotation on more than 150 radio stations around the USA, including WUMB 91.9 FM and WMBR 88.1 FM (Boston, MA), WUNH (Durham, NH), WCLZ 98.1 FM, WBLM 102.1 FM, and WPOR (Portland, ME), WSCA 106.1 (Portsmouth, NH), NHPR (NH, MA, ME), WXOJ 103.3 FM (Northampton, MA), WMPBN (Maine's NPR stations). Request them soon at a fine broadcasting establishment near you.
