In January 2007 a talented group of musicians came together to be the band ("Friends") for Armenian singer/percussionist, Tom Bozigian, for the Veselo Community Folk Dancers 29th Annual Festival. In less than two months the group had pulled together a rich collection of music of the Balkans. The first set was purely Armenian music while the second set featured Macedonian, Greek, Bulgarian and Turkish music. The audience was from the Veselo Community and all moved beautifully with the complex rhythms of the music.
Months after the group's beginning the founder, Daniel Eshoo, moved to California. The Mora then added accordianist, Kathy Fors, and percussionist, Lara Triback. The group has since performed at Mississippi Studios along with the Fishtank Ensemble and has a regular monthly engagement at Mississppi Pizza.
It seems auspicious that the group got its start as "friends." Friendship has been key to bringing and keeping this band together. Will you be our MySpace "friend?" "Mora" means "friend" in Romani.
MORA (mythology)
In Polish mythology, mora are the souls of living people that leave the body during the night, and are seen as wisps of straw or hair or as moths. In certain Slavic languages, derivatives of the word "mora" actually mean "moth."
In Serbian language, the word "mora" refers to a "nightmare." Mora or Mara is one of the spirits from ancient Slav mythology. Mara was a dark spirit that takes the form of a beautiful woman and then visits men in their dreams, torturing them with desire and dragging life out of them. In Hebrew Mora is a woman who teaches.
Blackened Cascadian Folk Experience the sounds of mist-woven myths and ancient folk ways, arisen from an ancient seed and come to life in a post-industrial landscape. The evening begins with anthropomorphic visions from Novemthree. Followed by the psychoacoustic volkish sounds of Portland's A Minority of One. Waldteufel points the way Northward and stirs the heart with archaic Heathen metal 'till Wode's appetite is sated! And at the evening's apex, Olympia's shamanic black metal atavists Fauna ascend and then transcend.
