NEW RECORD MIXES PURE AMERICANA STORYTELLING WITH PSYCHEDELIC POWER POP
The Mother Hips have flown under the radar as true indie music pioneers for almost two decades. With the release of their new album Pacific Dust, California's unsung psych-pop heroes tell their story. Hailed by critics for their "rootsy mix of 70s rock and power pop" (pitchfork.com) and for their unflinching ability to "sing it sweet and play it dirty" (New Yorker), on Pacific Dust The Hips' signature sound rings more genuine and relevant than ever before.
The Mother Hips have flown under the radar as true indie music pioneers for almost two decades. With the release of their new album Pacific Dust (available October 27th on Camera Records), California's unsung psych-pop heroes tell their story. Hailed by critics for their "rootsy mix of 70s rock and power pop" (pitchfork.com) and for their unflinching ability to "sing it sweet and play it dirty" (New Yorker), on Pacific Dust The Hips' signature sound rings more genuine and relevant than ever before.
The Hips - led by co-founders Tim Bluhm (vocals/guitar) and Greg Loiacono (guitar/vocals) - have been playing music for nearly 18 years, and in the process, have had the luxury of exploring and refining their craft. For the band's seventh full-length studio album, The Mother Hips have never been more primed to share their well-traveled tales - the long days and nights on the road, the gritty politics, the smart inward reflections and man, the music! - all delivered with a most appealing balance of Americana storytelling and their California-burnished rock.
Pacific Dust's compositions about penning a song in your kitchen at 3:00 am (the thundering album opener "White Falcon Fuzz"), record company politics (garage-rock boogie "Third Floor Story"), and a father and son's relationship through music (on the ballad "Young Charles Ives") indeed tell the story of many American rock bands. But here's why it matters: The Mother Hips have survived, and in fact thrived, throughout the journey - and Pacific Dust, with its bittersweet melodies, poignant lyrics, and strong and gritty musicianship, is a perfect example of why.
The Mother Hips owe most of their success to their large and loyal fanbase. Earlier releases such as Part-Timer Goes Full, Green Hills of Earth, and Red Tandy have become almost cult classics among indie music buffs, and the band's most recent 2007 album, Kiss the Crystal Flake, offered proof that the band still continues to attract new supporters. Over the years, the band has worked with and played alongside a slew of renowned/respected colleagues including super-producer Rick Rubin, Wilco, Johnny Cash, and many others.
Today, armed with their newest release Pacific Dust, The Hips are poised to take their experience and talent to another level for this next leg of their already epic journey.
Wish I could see you guy's tonight at the Doug Fir. It's always a great show there. This will be the first one I will miss(damned economy and furlough days) since I moved to the portland area:( Been following you guy's since the concert in the park Chico day's. You guy's rock! come back sooner than later. I need that new CD too!
YOu guys still kick big ass.. I played with you all in Cotati back in the late 90's.. I would love to do it again.. Here's my new rock band. We are very ready!! Drop a line if you need a local Sonoma County band with a healthy following to warm the stage. Ciao KC
Hey guys! Nate and I just got the new album/CD/Poster glorious combo..and we are listening to it was I type. B-E-A-utiful (as usual) God you guys rock! I have heard some of these songs at shows it feels like home. I can't get third floor story out of my head!!!! Oh well, there are worse things. Hope Nikki's debut is going well. Peace!
I just listened to Pacific Dust.. Once again you guys out did yourselves.. It's such a great album.. can't wait to see you guys this saturday in Alpine... Cheers.. Big Fan....
It's been a great month for live music for me. Watching you guys jam in Yosemite and the show at Cafe Du Nord for the new album Pacific Dust both were well worth the drive and the music just rocked period. The new album is real good and I'm glad Third Floor Story is on there. That song needs to rock the radio stations as it's just one of those songs that would grab people if they heard it on the radio. One Way Out, All In Favor and Pacific Dust are my new favorites and Third Floor Story has been a song I have loved for years and is well deserved to be on the album. Song in a can, Desert song and Grambler needed to be on there as well just because they have just been songs as a fan I have wanted a studio recoording of for years but I'm sure you guys will put them out some day. You guys have so much great music and you have done so much to many of the songs especially the jams added or extinded into many songs their all good and every show is special because no matter what the song, you guys blow it up and blow minds. Peace and thank you for the music...The Grambler............
