Mr. Boogie Woogie (aka) Eric-Jan Overbeek was born on April 5, 1967 in Nieuw Vennep, the Netherlands. Mesmerized by that old piano in the living room, Eric-Jan began studying classical piano at the age of eight. He demonstrated early an extraordinary talent for musical arrangement and got his first job at age twelve playing piano as an accompanist for dance classes. After listening to a Rolling Stones record he bought his first guitar, joined several high school bands but also played in church with two youth choirs. His early musical influences included guitarists such as Chuck Berry and B.B.King.
At the age of 14 Overbeek heard Fats Domino play the Swanee River Hop on the radio. It was from that moment that his fate was sealed. He decided then and there he wanted to be a Boogie Woogie piano player. By age sixteen he started his first band “The Millbase Blues Band”. In March 1988 the band won the Blues Concours at the Middelsea Jazz Treffen in Leeuwarden, Friesland. This success led to playing at larger festivals and concerts starting with the Amsterdam Blues Festival.
For his 19th birthday, friends arranged for top Dutch Boogie Woogie player Andre Valkering to be a surprise guest as his party. After hearing Overbeek play, they became good friends and Valkering began hiring him for gigs. This eventually resulted in the recording of the cd “Boogie Woogie Special” in 1993. Another Dutch great , the legendary Rob Hoeke, a Dutch Boogie Woogie institution, became a major influence and mentor until he passed away in 1999.
In 1990, Overbeek formed his own Mr.Boogie Woogie & the Firesweep Bluesband, started singing and toured internationally in England, France, Germany, Belgium, Spain and Corsica. On his own Firesweep Records label Mr.Boogie Woogie has recorded more than 10 cd’s and singles.
By 1994 Overbeek had started his own Boogie & Blues Night Festival in Hoofddorp, the Netherlands. Due to the overwhelming success, 2005 saw the show go on the road. And now it’s played in theaters throughout Holland. The festival features international rhythm and blues artists such as Sam Taylor, Anna Warr as well as Dutch phenomenons.
In 2001 Mr.Boogie Woogie made his U.S. debut in Tucson, Arizona performing with blues hall of fame artist: Lisa Otey. Just a year later Mr. Boogie Woogie played all over the Unites States.
Mr.Boogie Woogie has been a success at many Blues- & Boogie Woogie festivals, including the Belgium Rhythm & Blues Festival, Blues Passions Festival in Cognac, France, the Gaildorfer Bluesfest in the south of Germany, the Drijf-In-Bluesfestival in Giethoorn, Holland and holds the unique distinction as being the only musician in the world to play at the Amsterdam Bluesfestival at the Meervaart six times.
Mostly recently, Mr.Boogie Woogie has won the prestigious title of Best European Blues Pianist by Les Trophees France Blues in the company of the many of the world's best blues artists.
It is easy to see why Mr. Boogie Woogie continues to be:
