The song, Don’t Walk On By, is dedicated to Dan Mazur and David Sharp. Dan initiated the rescue of Lincoln Hall on the north side of Everest in 2006. David perished a week earlier on the same route of Everest just above C-3 while many climbers passed him by. I believe that each situation on a high altitude mountain should be looked at individually and that there are absolutely no guarantees in the death zone. But David’s location was such that a rescue would not have been that difficult as he was found at 8500 m (approximately 150 - 200 m above C-3). That particular stretch of the route is not technical. Climbers passed him on their way up and then again back down the mountain while he was still alive. On the other hand, not everyone that passed David would have been in a position to help him. Climbers at high altitude are at serious risk themselves and may be ill prepared to mount a rescue. I know this is a controversial topic but it is relevant to our world in general where the desire to “reach the top” at any cost is seen throughout our everyday lives.
