The Mutineers began in 2006 as the solo project of singer/guitarist Brian Mathusek. Reducing his songwriting to its barest essentials, he wrote lyrical stories and melodies that begged to be sung. But the sound he envisioned—rowdy folk songs from days gone by, when singing was inclusive and fun—was much bigger than what he could accomplish alone. He asked longtime friend Michael to join in on acoustic guitar in 2007. Mathusek plugged in the electric guitar, and the two began to add harmony to their rugged, stripped-down style. After recording The Mutineers EP in 2007, the duo took their act from their home base in Santa Barbara, Calif. up to San Francisco and Portland, Ore. They soon added Merry on drums, percussion and vocals. Now the once-lone voice of The Mutineers is a complete, if unconventional, trio that thrives on the three-part harmonies of their distinct voices. The result is pure, heartfelt, mug-swinging, sweet-and-sour, foot-stomping folk-rock.
The trio’s first EP, Tidal Wave, was released in June 2008. The band honed its new sound and further explored the three-part harmonies that were now possible. Tidal Wave also featured a more aggressive guitar sound, biting social commentary, and pounding percussion. With radio play on Indie 103.1 in Los Angeles, and several college radio stations in California, The Mutineers began to share stages with artists such as Langhorne Slim, The Devil Makes Three, Trainwreck, and The Tallest Man on Earth. At the same time the trio was back in the studio recording another four-song EP to be released in January 2009. Their latest offering, Nihilisteria (nihilist + hysteria), is a richer and more dynamic exploration of hope and fear that expands the range of The Mutineers eclectic sound. The EP opens with the wry country ballad “Sayonara Señorita” featuring a quiet guitar duet, and then swings into the post-punk title track “Nihilisteria,” recalling the sounds of X, The B-52s and The Velvet Underground. The convergence of diverse styles on the last two EPs speaks to the ambitious direction of The Mutineers for 2009.
