Female Fronted Melodic metal- that’s what THE MYSTERY, founded in spring 1996 called their style.
In contrast to many others gathering under this or a similar banner, THE MYSTERY chooses a warm but powerful rasping voice instead of opera-singing celebrated by bands such as “Nightwish”, “Evanescence” or “Within Temptation”.
So against the trend of symphonic Female Fronted Metal their own style has developed, following the Metal tradition of the eighties, but in no way stale or dusty sounding.
In other words: This is where you really get some rock!!! Melodies that settle in the head, blasted around the ears by a female rock singer causing goose-pimples inevitably evoke associations with names like Lita Ford, Gudrun Laos or Doro Pesch. Music coming from the guts and the heart, with “balls” despite a female singer.
Whoever has allowed themselves to be carried away by the energetic show of THE MYSTERY, as part of a sweating and head banging crowd, will easily understand why they were not only able to pass muster but also be able to shine on stages all through Germany and also outside alongside leading names like “Subway To Sally“, “Die Happy“, “Axxis”, “Die Apokalyptischen Reiter”, “Majesty”, “Rebellion”, “Chinchilla”, “Powerwolf”, “Mob Rules”, “Jaded Heart”, “Gun Barrel”, “Tankard”, “Final Breath”, “Unrest” and others. In home pastures as well as near and far foreign countries, like in Bosnia in front of a scene of 10.000 people in the year 2004- what remains is a hard rocked and fascinated audience.
In the studio THE MYSTERY is not unknown either. Two self-produced demo tapes and the début album “Scars” were released in the year 2005 and distributed by ALIVE!, were sung by Denise Olbrich.
Being their first work, “Scars” already shows all the trademarks of THE MYSTERY: a very varied and always inspired song writing, an arrangement which doesn't overload the songs and the consequent focus on melody. The record was given a lot of praise but also criticism by the press and fans, but this didn't shatter the band's conviction as to their musical direction, instead it encouraged the band to continue perfecting the qualities already demonstrated.
Since the end of the year 2006 Korry Schadwell now handles the microphone as the new voice and gives the current songs even more power and dynamics through her gifted rock voice. However the main focus remains on the melodies. A premise that is always recognizable in the tasteful and exceedingly melodic guitar-work of songwriter and lead guitarist Alex “Thunder” Martin. The band is completed by bass-player Christian J. Rüther and drummer Daniel Kahn.
In this line-up “Soulcatcher”, the successor to “Scars”, was recorded in the “Steelpride Studios” under the wings of Tarek “MS” Maghary (singer of “Metalforce” (Ex-“Majesty”)). The mastering was taken over by Uli Friedel in the “Church Mastering” studio (Justice, Doro, J.B.O., Testament, etc.). So it's no wonder that the CD offers a very powerful production.
Musically THE MYSTERY stay true to themselves on “Soulcatcher”, but show an even more diverse song writing in contrast to the predecessor.
Whether up-tempo-pieces such as the irresistibly catching opener “Take me to the light”, the potential hit “Judas betrayed”, the mid-tempo-banger and title track “Soulcatcher” or the half-ballad “Unready to die”- THE MYSTERY present themselves in a varied manner, with songs that hit the nail and never make you miss the rousing melody.
THE MYSTERY also demonstrate their special position concerning “melodic rock with female singing” on the sampler “Tribute to Steeö”, a sampler released in December 2008 by “Pure Steel records”, for which the Doros song “Bad Blood” was recorded under the direction of Siggi Bemm in the legendary Woodhouse Studios in Hagen.
As a consequence of the musically best release up to now and the line-up pulled together more than ever, the decision was made to look for a second guitar-player, in order to appear even more powerful, particularly live. After a short search and short practise Stefan Weitzel, an experienced rhythm-guitar-player, was taken on. Of course there will be no change concerning the musical direction through the band's expansion, the agenda remains melody-orientated Metal with rocking female vocals and “hit the nail” song writing. All this is to be completed by the successor to SOULCATCHER, untitled so far, for which the foursome plus front lady will lock themselves up in the studios during 2009.

Im Gegensatz zu vielen Anderen, die sich heute unter diesem oder ähnlichem Banner scharen, setzen THE MYSTERY auf eine warme aber druckvolle Reibeisenstimme anstatt des von Bands wie „Nightwish“, „Evanesence“ oder „Within Temptation“ zelebrierten Operngesanges.
Gegen den Trend des symphonischen Female Fronted Metal entstand so ihr eigener, an die Metaltradition der 80er Jahre angelehnter, aber in keiner Hinsicht verstaubt oder altbacken klingender Stil.
Mit anderen Worten: hier wird ordentlich gerockt!!! Sich im Schädel einnistende Melodien, um die Ohren geschleudert von einer Gänsehaut erzeugenden weiblichen Rockröhre lassen unweigerlich Assoziationen mit Namen wie Lita Ford, Gudrun Laos oder Doro Pesch aufkommen.
Musik, die aus dem Bauch und von Herzen kommt, und die trotz Frontfrau jede Menge „Eier“ hat.
Wer sich einmal als Teil einer schwitzenden und headbangenden Meute von der energiegeladenen Show von THE MYSTERY hat mitreißen lassen wird leicht nachvollziehen können, wie sie bisher neben Größen wie „Subway to Sally“, „Die Happy“, „Axxis“, „Die Apokalyptischen Reiter“, „Majesty“, „Rebellion“, „Chinchilla“, „Powerwolf“, „Jaded Heart“, „Mob Rules“, „Gun Barrel“, „Tankard“, „Final Breath“, „Unrest“ und weiteren auf den Bühnen der Republik und darüber hinaus nicht nur bestehen sondern auch brillieren konnten.
Sowohl in heimischen Gefilden als auch im benachbarten und weiter entfernten Ausland, wie z.B. 2004 in Bosnien vor einer Kulisse von 10.000 Zuschauern - zurück bleibt ein hart gerocktes und fasziniertes Publikum.
Auch im Studio sind THE MYSTERY keine Unbekannten. Zwei eigenproduzierte Demos und das Debüt-Album „Scars“, erschienen 2005 und vertrieben über ALIVE!, wurden noch von Denise Olbrich eingesungen. Als Erstlingswerk bietet „Scars“ bereits alle Trademarks von THE MYSTERY auf: ein sehr variables und stets inspiriertes Songwriting, ein die Songs nicht überladendes Arrangement, und die konsequente Fokussierung auf die Melodie. Von der Fachpresse und den Fans wurde die Platte mit viel Lob, aber auch mit Kritik bedacht, doch auch diese konnte die Überzeugung in die musikalische Ausrichtung nicht erschüttern, sondern spornte die Band im Gegenteil an, die bereits demonstrierten Qualitäten weiter zu perfektionieren.
Als neue Stimme bedient seit Ende 2006 Korry Schadwell das Mikro und verleiht den aktuellen Songs durch ihre begnadete Rockstimme noch mehr Druck und Dynamik. Trotzdem stehen natürlich weiterhin die Melodien im Vordergrund. Eine Prämisse, die auch in der stets geschmackvollen und überaus melodischen Gitarrenarbeit von Songwriter und Lead-Gitarrist Alex „Thunder“ Martin zu erkennen ist. Komplettiert wird die Band durch Basser Christian J. Rüther und Schlagwerker Daniel Kahn.
In dieser Besetzung wurde der „Scars“ Nachfolger „Soulcatcher“ in den „Steelpride Studios“ unter den routinierten Fittichen von Tarek „MS“ Maghary (Sänger von „Metalforce“ (Ex-„Majesty“)) eingespielt. Das Mastering übernahm Uli Friedel im „Church Mastering“-Studio (Justice, Doro, J.BO., Testament, u.a.). Es ist also kein Wunder, dass die CD mit einer äußerst druckvollen Produktion aufwartet.
Musikalisch bleiben THE MYSTERY sich auch auf „Soulcatcher“ treu, weisen aber im Gegensatz zum Vorgänger ein noch differenzierteres Songwriting auf.
Egal ob mit Up-Tempo-Nummern wie dem unwiderstehlich mitreißendem Opener „Take me to the Light“, dem Hit-verdächtigen „Judas betrayed“ dem zum Mitsingen animierenden Mid-Tempo-Banger und Titelsong „Soulcatcher“ oder der Halbballade „Unready to die“ – THE MYSTERY präsentiert sich abwechslungsreich, mit Songs die auf den Punkt kommen und niemals die zündende Melodie missen lassen.
Ihre Ausnahmestellung in Sachen „melodischer Rock mit Frauengesang“ demonstrieren THE MYSTERY auch auf dem im Dezember 2008 über „Pure Steel Records“ erschienenden Sampler „Tribute to Steel“, für den Doros Song „Bad Blood“ unter der Regie von Siggi Bemm in den legendären Woodhouse Studios in Hagen eingespielt wurde.
Als Konsequenz aus der musikalisch bisher stärksten Veröffentlichung und dem neuen, mehr denn je am gemeinsamen Strang ziehenden Line-Up, folgte die Entscheidung auf die Suche nach einem zweiten Gitarristen zu gehen, um vor allem Live noch druckvoller in Erscheinung zu treten. Nach kurzer Suche und Einarbeitungszeit wurde mit Stefan Weitzel ein routinierter Rhythmusgitarrist in die Band aufgenommen. An der musikalischen Ausrichtung wird sich durch die Banderweiterung natürlich nichts ändern, hier steht weiterhin melodieorientierter Metal mit rockiger Frauenstimme und „auf den Punkt“ kommendes Songwriting auf dem Speisezettel. Das Menü abrunden soll dann der noch unbetitelte SOULCATCHER-Nachfolger, für den sich der Vierer plus Frontfrau in 2009 hinter die Studiomikros klemmen wird.
