Interests

  • General

We were always interested in after-gig visits to Aetna in San Diego for that bizarre super-sweet pizza and occasional sightings of the "Chuck Berry Guy". In San Francisco our equivalent was getting a booth at North Beach Pizza. Ron liked El Indio on India St. in SD, and Carl likes El Cuervo. In NY we went to "The Hat" on the Lower East Side, back when it was the only lighted place at night for blocks around. ..

Ron doesn't talk about it much, but he knows a lot of baseball history, and has quirky interests of the "Americana" type, maybe partly owing to a hidden Kerouac influence, but probably more for his own reasons; he's a good one to bring along on a day at Coney Island.

We would all enjoy meeting at Caffe Trieste, only maybe not each other, if we only could. I hope Gene Pitney and Gianni Franco are still on the jukebox. I hope there is still a jukebox! We dig girls but we aren't allowed to talk about it.

About me:

Update Sept. '09: we recently played the show described advertised below, and can report that Montreal and The Wooly Weekend were dynamite! We can wholeheartedly endorse the concept for next year and advise you to attend. In other news, we made a t-shirt. Or maybe it's: "we made a t-shirt!" as we never had one before. Sizes are limited to medium and large at the moment. There's no real sales mechanism yet, no business office or P.O. Box, so write in via myspace to express interest! We sold some at $15 each at our to Montreal live shows, will need a bit for shipping if mailorder, but write in, and one of us will let you know the further skinny. Stay tuned for some kind of thumbnail view of what the design looks like.

THE NASHVILLE RAMBLERS AT THE WOOLY WEEKEND!
MONTREAL  SATURDAY, AUGUST 8th, 2009!..

The Ramblers will be headlining the afternoon show at the Wooly Weekend in Montreal - don't miss it! .... ....

We're best known for "The Trains", a song which appears on the recent Rhino Records box set, "Children of Nuggets". The tune originally was released on a 1986 UK-only compilation, "American Heart & Soul" on Hi-Lo Records. The track was also bootlegged on two Bomp Records compilations, "The Roots of Power Pop", and "Its a Mod, Mod, World" in the mid-1990s.

The band is, and has always been Tom Ward, Ron Silva, and Carl Rusk — who wrote all of the original material for the group. The Nashville Ramblers are also known for their ability to play marathon sets of obscure, mid-Sixites pop music — carefully chosen to fit their unique take on British Beat, American folk-rock, garage, and early rock & roll.

We started in 1985 in San Diego, California as teenagers (well, Ron was a bit older), later we all moved to New York City, and then San Francisco, while playing under the name The Black Diamonds. Recent notable gigs include The Las Vegas Grind in 2000, and The Wild Weekend in Benidorm, Spain in November 2004.

The group never really broke up, though separated geographically. At the moment, Tom is in New York City, Carl is residing in upstate New York, and Ron is in Alameda, California.

Ron Silva lived in Point Loma and founded the Crawdaddys in the late 1970's; Carl, who also attended Point Loma High School, joined with Ron in 1981 to form a 1961 Hamburg-style band called The Hedgehogs with future Tell Tale Heart singer Ray Brandes. Carl and Ray went on to form The Mystery Machine in 1983, who later became The Tell Tale Hearts when Carl left the band to attend art school in San Francisco. Tom sported a Vox violin bass on behalf of the Gravedigger V, before being recruited by Ron and Carl to be a part of the group. We had always wanted to be a four-piece, ideally with the addition of an organ, or Wurlitzer Electric Piano, but the right extra person never showed up.

More Info on Carl's site: www.carlrusk.com

Who I'd like to meet:

People who have seen and heard the band in the past. People who'd like to see and hear the band in the future — when we will all play while hovering with jet-packs on our backs.
