Relatively recent Brooklynites, The National Debt has been sneaking around town, popping up in different guises, and rising steadily barring a loan from some bank in Switzerland. The members, Mark Gurarie and Greg Pattillo began working together as part of the San Francisco based Collaborative Arts Insurgency (the C.A.I.), and the street arts workshop/ gathering/mayhem it hosts every Thursday night at 16th and Mission BART plaza. In NYC, a great financial center, the two have been getting fatter, meatier, like a bad ass fiscal policy rolled into a business lunch. If you graph it out, the x axis represents the inherent cerebral nature of their behemoth (words) and the y axis the visceral (the groove). Not quite hip-hop, nor slamster spoken word, it's poetry you can party to. Scratch your chin, shake your booty, light cherry bombs in the playground that is your dome. The resident flute/beatbox madman (and yes, he does the two at the same time), Greg also teaches (any style from Prokofiev to Mingus to Master P), and busts the chrome off people's ears sitting in, or playing solo. Sometimes, Mark gets off his high horse and performs at spoken word events. Viva l'amazingly low interest rates from the World Bank!
