.... and everything else by The Beatles, basically, because they started EVERYTHING and -let's face it- even their crap's better than most bands' best. NONE of the above would have existed without them, nor would this band - or YOUR favourite combo, for that matter.
And another thing : you think Paul Mc Cartney was/is soft? Listen to 'Helter Skelter' and try to convince me that it isn't the dirtiest, most brutal slab of noise ever recorded, huh! In nineteenfuckingsixty-eight, you know!
ISN'T LIFE JUST GRAND - The Neat 1990 - 1991 A SHORT BURST OF VICIOUS ENERGY
Lost Neat tapes recently resurfaced after having gathered dust for many years. Eight years after the silent demise of The Cultural Decay, Alex L. and Joseph V. kick-started The Neat, a completely different kettle of fish; more aggressive, dirtier, more punk (strange, come to think of it, as we had managed to master a fourth chord by then). The youthful naivety that made up a good part of the Decay’s appeal had gone by 1990, of course, replaced by bitterness and frustration. Songs about love, loners and happy families. Same guitars / vocals , new rhythm-section, battered old Fender and Faylon tube amps in the basement of an old school building. Carpet soaked by the umpteenth flood, strange mushroom-cultures on the walls, the smell hard to ignore. Tascam 4-track cassette and a couple of microphones on a plank fixed to the wall. Four angry not-quite-so-young men, a short-lived project, no releases, no concerts, just a bunch of demos recently saved from the dump (aren’t attics great!), including psycho-delic Dpt.S, Damned and Beatles (a particularly vicious 'Strawberry Fields') covers. Weird thing, hearing these again after so many years; and why the hell we thought we weren’t ready yet for concerts is ... surprising, with hindsight. Or maybe that was just because we hated everybody, or because some of us were becoming increasingly anti-social (if possible) and slowly but surely turning into real hermits. ... Anyway, here's some of it, warts'n all; have a listen and don't hesitate to comment, whoever you are. (Unless you're that Bozo twat from Fuck You Too, of course, in which case you've obviously got better things to do, like saving the universe or counting your fucking sunglasses.)
THIS BAND 'CEASED TO EXIST' IN 1991. ITS MEMBERS ARE NO LONGER ACTIVE MUSICIANS SO THERE WON'T BE ANY CONCERTS OR NEW STUFF. A 'POSTHUMOUS' INDEPENDENT RELEASE IS AVAILABLE NOW THROUGH AUDIOLIFE.
'If anger is an energy as John Lydon once put it, then these guys must be seriously pissed off by the sound of it' ('fast' Willy S.)
'this is no punk band, though it seems to know very well what to Live fast and Die young mean!' (caliGo - yazoo music grrrl )
Oh beloved The Neatasaurus. You are the winner of the SEXIEST SCALES AWARD!!! The competition may not be quite what it was in the late cretaceous, but nevertheless YOU DID IT!!! -NEUFUTUR: “Mirana’s vocals further establish Theory of Tides as a truly special act, one that can use the widest possible swath of approaches to create the music heard here.” - SKOPE: “Cool, hip and modern beats are fully loaded on this new albumand I simply can’t get enough!” -EMUSIC: “…it’s like alternative trance music, with brief smatterings of hip hop/latin beats. Arty, yes - but does it work? Actually, yes.” - NEUFUTUR: “Theory of Tides, and this album specifically, should be seen as a blueprint for how to properly incorporate disparate genres of music into one cogent sound.” - SKOPE: “…Mirana simply sang her heart out while she meshed in perfectly with Rick’s production the all around connection at the end with everything coming together beautifully proves that the tide is high.” - NEUFUTUR: “Karaoke is Theory of Tide’s first bona fide hit, with cohesion abounds between the instrumental and vocal sides of the act. This results in a track that rides a groove while Mirana’s vocals clue listeners into a wonderfully detailed narrative.” - EMUSIC: “Track’s like ‘Elated’ have an Ibiza-in-summer feel and a deep house beat underneath Mirana’s distinctive vocals. ‘Hour of Pain’ is built on a swishing cymbol symbol beat and keyboard chords, and again it works – the vocal fades and quiet bass additions are spot on.” - SKOPE: “One aspect that I truly loved about his album was the use of sounds and beats. The sound production is spot on with Rick bringing his A-game. I heard everything form hip hop, pop/dance, technoish, trance like and tribal beats…”
