Gigs - On Sunday 24 June the Netherbys and Adrian Kosky and Andy Vogel played at the Old Hepburn Hotel. After each doing a set of original material the boys dispensed with the house PA and sat “in the round” by the bar and belted out some choice covers to the great delight of the local audience. The Netherbys then headed off down to the Darebin Songwriters Guild at Wesley Ann in Northcote to play as feature act. Local songsters Unsung put on a harmony with the boys in their final song “The Ballad of Terry Hicks” leaving not a dry eye in the house.
The Netherby Brothers write, play and produce their own brand of contemporary folk music with an emphasis on vocal harmonies.
It's Original, Contemporary, Music, with strong Acoustic roots. With an eye to the future and an ear to the past, the Netherby Brothers songs paint pictures of real people and places, drawn from a lifetime of experience in Australia and travel to the far-flung corners of the globe.
As keen observers of the human experience their songs touch on matters of faith, life, philosophy, and inter-personal relationships.
The name “Netherby Brothers” morphed out of one of their favourite duos from the 60’s, the Everly Brothers. By a strange quirk of fate however it turns out that one branch of Greg’s ancestors arrived in Australia on the MV “Netherby”.
Trevor is a perceptive lyricist and an accomplished composer. He sings lead vocals and is a multi-instrumentalist, playing Maton acoustic and electric guitars, Martin and Carson-Crickmore 6-string guitars, a Taylor 355ce 12-string, all in many alternate tunings. His other talents include harmonica, percussion, keyboards and bass guitar.
Greg's musical collaboration with Trevor is subtle but ever-present. As well as co-producing much of their recorded material, on the performing side, he sings backing vocals, plays Matons flagship "Messiah" 6 & 12 string guitars, a mandola exquisitely hand-crafted by Dan Dubrowski, and a Washburn mandolin.
"OTHER TRACKS"
Describing their latest CD “Other Tracks” in the liner notes, the Netherby Brothers wrote;
“The songs continue in the vein of our first CD, “Songs from the Wood”, touching on matters of life, faith, people and the human spirit. Our romance with roads, trains and place names continues and if there is such a thing as an Australian identity, we try to capture some of it in our music.
Digital technology has revolutionised the recording industry. Taking full advantage of the wonderful and amazing array of tools available to today’s semi-professional musician, our musical arrangements have taken a great leap forward with the addition of a rhythm section and various other electric and acoustic sounds to our otherwise “stripped back” style of mix.
We started in April 2005 with a few basic acoustic guitar tracks and over the following year we added things, took things away, mixed and remixed.
In the true folk traditions of fostering one’s own cottage industry, “Other Tracks” was written, played, arranged, critiqued, recorded, mixed, mastered, photographed, designed and produced within the Netherby Brothers family.
As for the songs, I still don’t know where they come from, but come they do. As long as they keep coming, we have breath in our lungs and people who want to listen to us, then the Netherby Brothers will keep making music.”
"THE 2006 AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL SONGWRITING AWARD"
For over a decade Netherby Brothers songs have received critical recognition as finalists in the Australian Songwriting Association competitions. Well, we've done it again! After making the finals on three previous occasions, including the bronze medal in 1997 for "Queen Bess Row", we've finally cracked the big one.
Brother Trevor penned a song about the Beaconsfield mining accident and it has been awarded First Prize in the Australia category of the 2006 Australian National Songwriting Awards.
Titled Beaconsfield, it tells the story of Brant Webb and Todd Russell's miraculous rescue after a rock fall buried them in a cage deep underground at the Beaconsfield mine in northern Tasmania. Trevor and Greg performed the song at the 26th Awards Presentation in Sydney on Thursday 10 August 2006.
Bruce Watson covers The Netherby Brothers
After a gig at the Darebin Songwriters Guild in July 2006 respected Melbourne folk singer/songwriter Bruce Watson congratulated The Netherby Brothers on their performance and asked if he could their song The Ballad of Terry Hicks in his set list.
Trevor wrote the song a few years earlier about Terry Hicks ordeal as the father of accused terrorist David Hicks.
Exchanging emails a few days later, Bruce said, The biggest compliment I ever give a song is that I wish I'd written it - and that's the case with this one.
The Ballad has also been covered by Melbourne acoustic group "Unsung".
City of Yarra Community Day 2001 to 2005
For five years in a row, the Netherby Brothers featured at the City of Yarra Community Day, in Fitzroy, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. In 2004, the Event Manager commented, I received some wonderful comments about your set. It obviously was a hit - as always! Once again, thanks for the great performance.
Queen Bess Row on The Planet
The opening track from Songs from the Wood, Queen Bess Row was featured on ABC Radio National's eclectic music program The Planet shortly after its release. The Producer commented "...some perceptive songwriting... liked the essentialness of the music, as it were and liked the way you've gone about recording it. You should rightly be very pleased with the outcome." Thanks, Mark!

Thank you for your beautiful music.
I played "Castlemaine" to my grandparents who lived in Maldon, and they were absolutely astounded by how good you were.
Your music tells a beautiful story, like the music of Paul Kelly.
Keep up the good work, and thanks!
Hi Guys,
How's it all goin'? Finally got the pics under control - Margaret came around with her mobile phone and here's the result. Hope all is well. Keep singing that song about David Hicks. Catch you soon.
