Ron Arra was busy fronting the highly experimental My First Handgun. Chris Eskola was rocking out on bass in a local guitar super-rock outfit called Pipe. Dave Coniglio was dropping some phat funk beats for Greesome. The three were definitely busy, but they were somehow unsatisfied. They were all making some great music, but there was something missing. One day these three eclectic individuals got together to jam, where they figured out what that was. They entered that rehearsal space in Allston, MA that late spring night in 2005 with no more intention than to play. No rules. No conformity. Just to take a break from their current projects to have fun and rock out the way each of them wanted. The three of them quickly realized that this night happened for a reason.
The Newtz
were born.
What started out as something fun to do almost immediately became an active side project as they began to notice that not only could they play their instruments exactly how they wanted, without other band mates telling them that their parts didn’t fit with the formula, but they were writing some damn good music!!! Over the next year,
The Newtz rapidly began to make their mark, Playing everywhere from Boston to Manhattan, impressing crowds (as well as the other bands playing on each given night) with their blend of Melvins style sludge rock, Floyd-esq. texturing, and power pop song structures. The Newtz were on a serious roll, but inevitably, the wind was about to be taken out of their sails.
Summer of 2006, while getting ready for what would be their biggest show yet, Opening the Sound Museum showcase at the Middle East in Cambridge with local heroes Superpower and We’re All Gonna Die, Dave dropped a bombshell on Ron and Chris when he revealed that he’d be ending his time with the band to move cross country. The band played there final show to much acclaim and disappeared.
Months went by, and finally, in late 2006, the band received an email in response for their long running ad for a new drummer. Ron and Chris had auditioned dozens of great drummers but none seemed to be a match until they read a reply from an obviously excited guy by the name of
Kyle Rasmussen, formerly of Cape Cod metal giants, Slaughter Master and the power duo, The Basilisk. Chris and Ron, at this point only moments from giving up and going their separate musical ways, decided that this guy was way to amped to overlook, so they invited him down to their rehearsal space to Rock out. While at first, it was hard to accept the fact that he just was not Dave, Kyle proved not only to be a great fit, but just metal enough to give The Newtz the added energy they needed and a new Chapter was about to be written!
May 2007,
The Newtz finally played their Comeback show at the Bulfinch Yacht Club. Technical difficulties and a little rust aside, the show was a success and people soon realized that The Newtz were back and better than ever!!! Over that summer, The Newtz got quite busy, unleashing a fury on crowds around Boston over and over again, each time with twice the energy of the last performance until September 2007 where they earned the Honor of Loudest Band to ever Play the Model in Allston!!! That night proved quite integral in The Newtz future as not only did they kick major Allston Ass, but The audience was full of local Rock Stars, members of We’re All Gonna Die, Damone, Murder Mile, Roadsaw, Casey Desmond, Campaign for Real Time, Duncan Wilder Johnson and Monolith!!!
And
The Newtz Keep Rockin!!! The band is currently working on their long awaited Full-length debut Album which, rumor has it, may feature some surprise cameo appearances! They also have plans to continue to cultivate and mature their sound while wowing larger and larger audiences!
Hey guys, How are ya?? I NEED YOUR HELP!! Im in the contest at the HOTPICKS page, PLEASE follow the link and put "I VOTE FOR CHRIS ALLEN!!" in the comments to get me in the next issue of GUITAR WORLD or REVOLVER magazine... THANX a million my friend!!!
Hey, gents, Hope the show went well. You should try to play Great Scott more often. Better bar than O'Briens, more space, better layout. Anyway, take it easy, I'll see ya' the next time around.
HEY. I was hoping you wouldn't see it until today, so I could re-respond. It really was a superb show by you guys! I didn't catch the name of the new guy, but he was excellent. I was standing right in front of him against the stage. I hope you can release a better sounding, and updated disc at some point.
Cool, lots of new stuff! A new record, that must be fun, and a new musician in the band, well, good luck with that. I'll check my book in February to see if I'm free... I just might be able to squeeze in a show!
