In memoriam:
Bill Shutz:(1949-2003) Guitar and vocals. 1979-1980. Bill was a founding member and the most unknown and unremembered Nick Garvey guy. He left the band just before local popularity made the thing take off. Nick Garvey was nutorious for picking up old '60's tunes that fit into the "New-Wave" trend & Bill was famous for saying, "I played all
these songs when they were a hit the first time." We were too young to feel that old.
Joel used to call him "Pops" because he was eight to ten years older than the rest of
us. At the time, it seemed like a big gap to me, not so much now.
Bill left us as band member in 1980 and from this world on April 15th 2003.
Bill was the first Nick Garvey casualty, only 54 years old. If we, as a band, thought
we had a slice of life and opportunity on the table, Bill taught us 23 years later how easily and quickly one slice can be taken from the pie.
Joel & I like to think that we're still too young to feel that old, although not on a nightly basis.
Rest In Peace, Bill Shutz, one of the original Garvey Boys. We miss you.
=============================================
David Wells: (1961-2003) aka "Poncho": Bass and vocals 1985-1986.
When founding member Don decided to leave the group in spring of 1985, we made one
phone call, as I remember. It was to David Wells, known to us and most of Flint
simply as Poncho. A musician's musician, who sang, played several instruments, wrote songs and at a high
personal cost had no other calling in life. He was a beautiful soul & for the short time
he was one of The Garvey Boys, we played some great music & enjoyed the adventure.
Poncho passed away in December of 2003. He was only 42. We'll always be proud of the
gigs & road time we spent with David "Poncho" Wells. Rest In Peace, Brother In Arms &
sing with the angels.
