The No Real Need has been moulding a tuneful and slyly unorthodox brand of rock and roll since it began in Melbourne, Australia in 2006. Thistles Where We Slept is the band's debut album. The twelve songs on this spiky, energetic, melody-driven pop record have their origins in a tattered bedroom cassette index, where they gestated in a pool of lo-fi muck, eventually crawling their way out of the bedroom into a recording studio on the other side of the globe. Recorded and mixed in a 4-day marathon session at Waterloo Sound in Kent, Ohio USA by Todd Tobias (Robert Pollard / Circus Devils), Thistles subtly channels the spirit of Guided By Voices and the cerebral crunch of Wire. An economy of melody, noise, abandon and triumph, Thistles is a revelry in nascent awareness; the sound of a stricken young man trying to fight his way out of a straight-jacket of abstraction.
