For over 20 years, Saskatoon-based musicians, The Northern Pikes, have proven to be one of Canada's most enduring and critically-acclaimed bands with their unique-sounding prairie pop and poignant lyrics. Formed in 1984 by Jay Semko and Bryan Potvin, and later joined by Merl Bryck and drummer Don Schmid, they were signed to Virgin records in 1986 and have since released 9 albums, including a greatest hits package and two live discs.
With hit singles like "Teenland," "Things I Do For Money," "Wait for Me," "Kiss Me You Fool," and "She Ain't Pretty," along with extensive touring across Canada and the United States, the Pikes amassed legions of fans and several Juno nominations. In 2001, they won "Best Pop Performance" for their album, "Truest Inspiration," at the Prairie Music Awards.
In 2006, they are still playing shows across the country and have been joined by TV's "Survivorman", Les Stroud, who will be releasing an album with the Pikes later this year. The Pikes are also going to be releasing "Beautiful Music" in 2006 which will be an amalgamation of "Truest Inspiration" and their 2003 album "It's a Good Life" along with a bonus DVD.
