xNoBBQx Skewer 10" LP (Ltd to 300 copies) - Out May 12th

We first came across xNoBBQx (just call them No Barbeque, I guess) in Piccadilly Records last year when the Siltbreeze vinyl reissue of their first CD-r appeared on its shelves. The Siltbreeze label being a bastion of all that is great in terms of dirgy, lo-fi, transcendental unmusicality, we were thus intrigued to hear this slab. And, we have to say, it was one of the greatest shop-listening experiences of all time. Here was a duo, probably of fully grown men, bashing away at their instruments in a manner that suggested they had never really learned any 'proper' technique.
We later read a review, in fact, that put it thus:

"So what exactly is the difference between an xNoBBQx recording and a couple of 14 year olds bashing instruments in the garage with record pressed down on one of their mum’s old tape recorders? Probably not a whole lot, actually, but I get the feeling that’s precisely the point.
" (Cyclic Defrost)

Well, yes, that does largely seem to be the point. But it's a helluva point. The Australian duo, in spite of their unabashed simplicity, manage to create sounds that are warm as an old-fashioned blanket, each piece having the ability to induce a state of complete, dribbling mental stasis. It's disjointed, scratchy and 'difficult', yes. But it also manages to be completely absorbing. If you like your rock deconstructed to the nth degree, we highly recommend you dig this.

xNoBBQx will be touring the UK from 10th May 2009.
We'll be putting them on in Manchester on 12th May (venue TBC), so keep yr eyes on this page.

For now, you can pre-order your copy of this stellar new 23 minute masterpiece at myspace.com/goldenlabrecords

Vampire Blues is the duo of guitar player Jon Collin (Serfs, The Whole Voyald) and harmonium player Jon Marshall (The Hunter Gracchus, Peril Hill). They have a pretty special tape out on Blackest Rainbow. We can't recommend them highly enough.

The Fifth Band is the gobsmacking trio of Stephen Lawrie (The Telescopes), Bridget Hayden (Vibracathedral Orchestra) and Kryszt Hladowski (The Family Elan). Oof.

A Wake is the duo of Nick Mitchell and Fliss Horrocks who also play in Beach Fuzz. This will actually probably end-up being a Beach Fuzz performance - this incarnation's first inside the UK.

yo northern wires, sweet gig happening on friday in manchester, spread the word:

PEE ESS EYE

Since 2002 The Peeesseye (Jaime Fennelly, Chris Forsyth & Fritz Welch) has been combining elements of warped rock architecture, freejazz horror, intergalactic glossolalia and stripped down abstract expressionism. Their concerts and recordings travel through fields of fine decay and up against walls of bonechilling catharsis. On tour around there colour out of space festival date, from New York.

PORTENTS

Psychedelic noise duo from south Manchester, members of Barbarians and Trinity.

WHEEL OF EYES

Thick wall of drone and fog from quartet featuring A Middle Sex, Stuckometer, & Hockyfrilla druids.

Like fellow Liverpudlians Hot Club De Paris...with bouncy, choppy riffs and a very much danceable rhythm, synths swirl like a demented fairground ride while the boys perform fantastic, sing along harmonies. MAKE NOISE AND DANCE

Elks

Jerky post hardcore pop complete with rousing manic vocals. a bitn like Fugazi and Charlottefield FOOTBALL

Napoleon IIIrd will now be playing this Friday April 4th at Cafe Saki instead of Itch.

Therefore the full line up is now

Napoleon IIIrd

"Napoleon IIIrd is possibly the most visionary solo artist on the planet at this moment in time....the most striking aspect of Napoleon IIIrd’s set is the huge propensity of sound one single man can make. Shut your eyes for a second and you’d expect the stage to be filled by some 12-piece orchestra." Drowned in Sound

with Arms At Last, The Search Map and My Amiga.

FRIDAY 4th April at Cafe Saki

Itch

"Itch are quite breathtakingly, pant-twitchingly awesome. Songs stop, start, fall over themselves, kick themselves up the arse, explode into cataclysmic bursts of energybefore suddenly veering off into seemingly irreconcilable tangents that seamlessyly reconcile themselves within the space of a few minutes"

Arms At Last

"Arms At Last sound like what would happen if Dartz! and Hot Club De Paris had an affair." FuckingDance. blogspot. com

The Search Map

’Glitch ridden intelli pop of the highest order - like TV On The Radio playing Modest Mouse at their tenderest’ - Subba-Cultcha

My Amiga

Plenty of harmonies, hand claps and guitar taps make for another band to add to the list of super fun bands being produced in Liverpool at the moment.

on sunday 30th march THREADS - Bringing the stadium to a shoebox near you, ex-Lee Malvo/Month of Birthdays/Khang take us on a winding Led Zeppelin/Thin Lizzy trip. They were recently left one member down, but don't worry, I have been informed they will still be rocking on this date.
END THE AGONY - Cathartic sludgy emo/hardcore from Brighton. Dan and Jamie used to do the much missed Cat On Form with steve of recent Blood Red Shoes fame. Of course this band are nothing like BRS.
MONGLOLIA - Stoner instrumentals from Dublin. Hard to do non-obvious descriptions so what the hell, like Kabinboy/Goatsnake.
8-11pm at the klondyke club, burnage range (off albert road), levenshulme. there are 2 trains after 11 and the regular 192 bus back to city centre. venue is only a couple of mins walk from the station/bus route. £4 on the door, all ages welcome.
