About me:
There are thousands who are in opinion opposed to the [problems], who yet in effect do nothing to put an end to them... They hesitate, and they regret, and sometimes they petition; but they do nothing in earnest and with effect. They will wait, well disposed, for other to remedy the evil... At most, they give only a cheap vote, and a feeble countenance and Godspeed, to the right, as it goes by them.

- Civil Disobedience
Henry David Thoreau

Woodruff High School is riddled with problems, plain and simple. Some problems stem from the administration, others from society in general, but the bulk come from the students themselves. Teachers can't publicly speak out because it would outrage the students and if you outrage the students, you outrage the parents and outraged parents lead to fired teachers. So for fear of losing their jobs, teachers stay quiet and let certain autrocities go unnoticed. Society would rather pretend there's absolutely nothing wrong with public education instead of fixing it. What they forget is the current students are tomorrow's society leaders. That's a scary thought. In the end, there's only one option, students speaking out against students, society and the administration. But because fear of retaliation by other students, or the administration, students stay silent. Those who do wish to voice their opinions go to mediums like the school paper, only to find it's heavily censored by the administration. Because of all this, we've created The North Side Times, an underground paper for the students, by the students. We, the staff of The North Side Times, are fighting back against the censorship and retaliations of free speech at Woodruff. This is our stand. These issues needed to be said, so we said them, our voices won't be silenced. Here they are, Woodruff's issues, finally addressed.

The views and opinions given here are exactly that, opinions. Most of us are hypocrites for writing what we do. We aren't a bunch of religious junkies trying to right the world nor do we think anyone will truely listen. We would really love if people listened to us, but history has shown that's it's almost impossible to get through to the people who should be listening the most. We write what we do because we were in these people's shoes once. Through many stumbles in life we have learned what is truely important and we hope other's follow our example and change themselves for the better. Some of the members of The North Side Times staff have attempted suicide, drank underage, experimented with drugs, had pregnancy scares, committed violence against others and have been all around disrepectful. We know that the negative consequences are never dwelled on and that as teenagers, we think we're invincable. As a society, we do whatever is pleasurable, what Freud called the "Id complex". That is why we're here, to show why certain things are just plain stupid and shouldn't be done, why certain issues should be resolved and show why certain people should just grow up. To many people's dismay, we're going to deliver these articles bluntly and not sugarcoat the truth. So sit back, buckle up and enjoy the ride, welcome to The North Side Times.
