My interest in serial killers all started with Ted Bundy. He's - to some extent - the reason why I try to analyse these characters. Bundy's shell showed a nice and handsome guy, behind which he's been cruel and ruthless. He absolutely lacked the ability for empathy. What seems most fascinating to me, is, that he was very intelligent and impressed me by managing to postpone his electrocution several times, sometimes only minutes before it should happen to be. He escaped from prison twice. Later he defended himself in court. By being handsome, he draw the girls as if he was a filmstar. The weeks before his execution, he got around 200 letters DAILY from girls confessing to love him. Imagine: after it was clear, what he has done, the girls were still mad about him and bestow on him more letters than on George Clooney!!! The judicial proceedings were spectacular: girls have always been present, who spied for him and who were giggling in the courtroom. Unbelievable to think it was a court case of a serial killer! Like almost any serial killer, Ted Bundy was good at keeping up appearances, so nobody realized his propensities or what he's done. His best friend, Ann Rule, with whom he was working at a counselling hotline, later wrote the book "The stranger beside me", for she had no reason to believe, the Ted she knew was the guy, the police was looking for, even after she had heard, it was a "Ted" they were searching. She always praised him for his ability to interact with people smoothly and nice. At this call-center they were most of the time keeping people away from suicide. Besides studying law, Bundy studied psychology. Ann always complimented Bundy on his intuition always to tell the people exactly the right things. The thing most impressive and fascinating to me is, that Ted Bundy was a guy, who was smart, handsome, intelligent above-average and so could have reached any goal he wanted. He could have been anything in the world. His profs regarded him as one of the best students, who was comitted and dilligent. He could have been a star-lawyer or a politican for he was politically and socially involved. Besides he could deal with people and was very popular. He could have been awfully successful in his life. All this stayed refused to him, because he just couldn't deter himself from killing. One could call this an addiction to murder. He had to kill and couldn't save his own life because of his lust to kill. Ted Bundy destroyed his own life and smiled at the same time. To me this shows, that he was actually sick. This was the start for me to study serial killers. ....
