This is a small insight into one of the Junco's biggest influences. "The Wolf"
The Juncos performing Howlin' Wolf's Smokestack Lightnin' for the upcoming documentary "Gettin' the Blues".
The Juncos enjoy the talents of two unique singers of who combine Soul,
Blues with spontaneous good humour that enliven the whole occasion. Two
distinctively different lead guitarists and a fine Rock'n'Roll sax player
each have the ability to pull mind blowing solos out of thin air. In
addition the long running rhythm section partnership of Fender bass and a
drummer, who has played with Robert Palmer and Elkie Brooks, form a sold
platform to encourage all to fill the dance floor.
Formed in 1964 Juncos took over from the 'Animals' at the famous 'Club
A'Gogo' & 'Downbeat Club' in Newcastle. The band experience instant
popularity all over the North of England playing frequently at the Mayfair &
Majestic Ballroom in Newcastle and at Redcar Jazz Club, Kirklevington
Country Club Sunderland's Bay Hotel and Cubana & 'Blue Note' Clubs and
venturing to Carlisle, Sheffield and all points between sometimes playing
twice a day.
Six years on the national rock club and college circuit followed playing
with 'The Who', 'Rod Stewart', 'Jethro Tull' 'Jimi Hendrix' 'John Mayall
Band' and many others. They toured as backing band to Blues giants 'Howlin
Wolf and 'Freddie King' in 1969 and were delighted to gain Wolf's respect.
Incidentally the Juncos appear in a new book on Howlin Wolf called
'Moanin' at Midnight' written by James Segrest and Mark Hoffman that was
published recently by Thunder Mouth Press New York ISBN 1 56025 683 4 and
get some good mentions and we have recently contributed to a forthcoming
book on Eric Clapton/ John Mayall in preparation by Christopher Hjort who
has a book on Jeff Beck out now so we still attract interest from unlikely
quarters and recent feature in John Topler 'NorthStars'.
The band made single and album releases but split in 1971 when individual
members went on to play with Robert Palmer, Elkie Brooks, Mick Abrahams,
Mick Ronson & Lindisfarne and tour the world.
Re-formed in 1978 the 'Juncos' returned to their R'n'B roots playing R'n'B
classics performed in an entertaining way with good humour, skill, love and
respect. Remarkably they continue to receive fantastic support from a
growing and enthusiastic audience playing only the very best & well-selected
venues, concerts & Blues festivals.
Occassional TV appearances include TTTV forerunner to 'The Tube' 'Alright
Now' with Eric Burdon especially flown in from Los Angeles to jam live in
the studio. Recent Granda TV appearance in December'03 and past BBC TV cameo as 'the Juncos' on Jimmy Nails Spender' demonstrate the lasting interest in the band and confirms the indefatigable quality that still attracts and
pleases their audiences. Recent accolades echo the sentiments made by the
great Howlin Wolf three decades ago and Sting, Jimmy Nail and John Miles
more recently.
Still going strong having just come back from a successful tour of Spain
playing the Juncos new CD 'Almost Down in New Orleans' is now on sale and
has been acclaimed as the Bands best album in their long career bringing New
Orleans to New 'Castle
