Deep down in Dorset, close to the sea, rang out like the last order bell, calling on saints and sinners to free their minds to the revolution of music. Written about tales of love lost and not found, dreams made and nightmares broken, the past’s impact on the future and the futures relativity to the present four personalities become one force inside the music of The Otherhalf.
"There’s an evil innocence writing something that stands so true but can take you so far from where you are," says The Otherhalf Vocalist Dan Hammond-Smith. "We have spent so long searching for where we are as musicians that every day seems like a new accomplishment when we write something that takes us to a new milestone as a band". The ability to tell compelling stories and lyrical tales isn't the only thing that The Otherhalf brings to the table. The band pride themselves on not only writing up beat tunes to raise your hands to but the ability to write emotionally and truthfully and not only reflect that in lyric but in music as well.
“Our music is about collaboration and knowing where we are individually to make the collective stronger” says bassist Sean Hines. A strong statement echoed by each band member.
The Otherhalf realise the importance of home, the first to admit they don’t forget where they are from and hold there home town of Bournemouth so close to there hearts. “Our songs start from our experiences and these normally happen at home, where else can we write about living on the beach or spending all day and all night running around town, it’s the same for anybody but we love where we are from” says Dan Hammond-Smith.
The Otherhalf believe that the fan is the extra member of the band, “I think that when we play our songs live, the interaction with the crowd is so key that they get where are coming from and know how strong much of us we are exposing our souls and they realise that, this isn’t some cheesy pop band, this is four guys who really believe in what we are doing, we love our influences and we want to influence others” says Drummer Phil Hodgetts
Guitarist Mike Forbes comments on the band’s expansion of its sound and subject matter, saying "The song writing took on a life of its own, as the structures of the songs themselves have grown so much from playing live. We have so much more to talk about and can use the things we picked up musically.” He admits the band also kept the ladies in mind this time around, recalling, “On the last record, girls would come up to us and say, 'you have songs for guys, so where are our songs?’ So we have a song called 'Yolandi' on this record, which is a tongue in cheek song about a trip we once took."
From the first beat of the Phil Hodgetts bass drum to the last scrape of the Mike Forbes guitar pick on his strings The Otherhalf are here to stay, with a sample of their first EP Confessions of Certain Addictions to download for free of Myspace this is the new band for 2009.
