Raised Marcelle Rashad Lofton, Y2M was born on April 22nd, 1990 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is half Jamaican and half African American. His mother went to high school with former rapper Mark Canty. His uncle is a friend of a musician known as Pierre. His late uncle Jayden Gibson was a DJ at a record store and was apart of a rap group known as The Renaissance by being a producer. His stepfather is friends with a rapper name Ice Dogg who is known for hit singles such as “My Part of Town”, etc.
Throughout his life, Y2M was always known as being a person that anybody can easily talk to and get along with. He always stood out of the dangerous streets of Philadelphia. His passions are two things: writing and computers. Occasionally, Y2M was told by family members and friends that he looks like and favors Kanye West a little bit. In the 7th Grade, Y2M learn about music while attending Wakisha Charter School. He was taught by his music teacher name Mr. Venable. Y2M passed his music class with a B Average. Months later, he started to do comedy rap by saying funny comments about his classmates. In the 8th Grade, Y2M qualified for a dance contest to win twenty-five dollars. He almost won the contest by imitating dance moves performed by Michael Jackson. Later that year, Y2M participated in his first talent show by performing stand up comedy. It was the first time that he brought entertainment to the stage.
Y2M also loves to entertain people whether it was from dancing, making them laugh by being funny, having fun, or performing at talent shows. He has love entertainment since he was young. Originally, Y2M wanted to pursue a career working for the F.B.I. But after watching the BET Awards in 2004, he decided to pursue a dream of being in the entertainment industry.
From summer 2004 to summer 2006, Y2M wrote two video game scripts based on superheroes. He sent letters to Electronic Arts Inc in Redwood City, California in hopes to getting his video game scripts viewed before getting created and turned into video games. Electronic Arts Inc mailed Y2M various letter and a Product Submission Agreement to create a playable game prototype of his video game scripts. Unfortunately due to a personal circumstance, he never signed the Product Submission Agreement or created the playable game prototype.
Before graduating from high school, Y2M wrote two unpublished books that were based on his video game scripts. In his 11th Grade year, Y2M was introduced to a book author name Dedan Tolbert who own a book publishing company called Tolbert Books. After receiving information about book publishing from book author Dedan Tolbert and his book publishing company Tolbert Books, Y2M is currently on the verge of getting his first two books published.
In the 9th Grade, he attended New Media Technology Charter School. Throughout his high school year, Y2M was taught video production, web design and video game design. From the 10th Grade to the 11th Grade, Y2M had his taste of success. He was an event planner/booker by setting up, promoting, scheduling, advertising, supervising, arranging, executive producing, planning, participating, and hosting talent shows. He describes it as being a way to entertain people by bringing entertainment to the stage and giving people something to talk about, which was successful. Y2M was never asked by his high school to set up the shows and he was never graded for it. He even developed himself as not being nervous of being in front of a huge audience.
After passing the 11th Grade, Y2M was enjoying his summer vacation by attending video production classes and listening to music on XM Radio. Until one day, something happen. He was listening to artists such as B.G., T.I., Kanye West, Tupac Shakur, The Fray, Common, Nelly Furtado, and Timbaland. It inspired Y2M to be interested in pursuing a career in music. Y2M also thought of an idea that he wanted to start his own vanity label called Moonsault Records. So he started writing poetry about topics based on melodies and harmony.
Y2M was taught about the music industry by his stepfather who was apart of Ruffhouse Records in the 90’s. While on Ruffhouse Records in the 90’s, his stepfather and a friend started rapping in rap shows and even opening up shows for known rappers. They met and became friends with Cypress Hill. They’re still friends up to this day but live different life styles. Their skills drew the attention of the Wu Tang Clan. Unfortunately, they never signed with the Wu Tang Clan.
Y2M stands for “Yelling 2 Maverick.” Y2M also means phenomenon, elevation, risk taking, innovation and adrenaline. He has gone under the name “Y2M” since the 11th Grade after the name gain success from both friends and on MySpace. Y2M’s music style is a mixture of Hip Hop, Pop, R&B, Rock and Reggae. With both his energetic melodic flow and a smooth harmonic flow, Y2M’s style and technique is described as being melodic, harmonic, energetic, and smooth. Y2M consist of not cursing in his music and believes he can make good music without the use of cursing. He wanted to make positive music that will entertain/inspire/motivate people by making people feel good about it whether it be from dancing and having fun to it. He also wants to gear his music for people to listen no matter how old they are and for people to listen to no matter what they're race is. Y2M want to be viewed the way people view artists such as Kanye West and Soulja Boy.
Now, Y2M is set on pursuing his dreams by achieving success in both the music industry and entertainment industry. He is ready to go on the road of being “the biggest entertainer he can ever be”.
