For the three months that made up autumn 2004, the absolute opposite occurred of most, if not every, autumn before it. Four brown leaves would rise from the pith of unraked lawns and climb back onto the tree from whence they came. They were vibrant and alive again!
One of the leaves on the aforementioned tree was named Erik Krug. As a young leaf, he played the guitar with another lanky leafling named Andrew Busch. These two had known each other for years and years before they began their climb up this beautiful, new tree. On their way up, Adam Skinner, a red-haired leaf, joined them and played the bass (with his non-climbing hand, of course). Perched atop a rugged limb, beating the limb and causing the dead leaves to fall out, was a scruffy-looking leaf, cackling and sweating maniacally. This leaf was named Drew Hackney. Adam, Andrew, and Erik (in alphabetical order) noticed their lack of a drummer and singer, and then, to their surprise, noticed his uncanny resemblance to one who could fit the roles perfectly. With perfect diction and perfect clarity, all three chimed in—in perfect three-part harmony—their request for his companionship on their climb. Noting his lack of interest in remaining stagnant on his lonely limb, Drew happily obliged and they began their collective ascent as The Old Regime.
Three years and many beers later, The Old Regime have climbed relentlessly to reach as high as their tree can take them. Soon, their tree will converge with the sprawling limbs of a taller and wiser tree. And with reckless but deliberate abandon, the four green leaves known as The Old Regime will rise to meet each ascending echelon of its musical landscape, until one day the great wind of opportunity sweeps them out of the foliage and starts their great, whimsical freefall into the vast and all-knowing sea or musical creation and freedom.
After gaining a following on the NCSU campus by playing parties and other
functions, The Old Regime has moved on to play at many venues around the
triangle area such as The Pour House Music Hall, The Berkeley Cafe, The Brewery, the Farmhouse, James Joyce Irish Pub, and
Top of the Hill just to name a few. They have been working recently to
expand their fan base and to become recognized throughout the state for
their live performances and spontaneous improvisation.
The musical web that intertwined between them was very intricate and the
sound created was tight and complex, whose musical styles range from the
jazzy undertones of Steely Dan to the controlled chaos of Frank Zappa.
