The Only Michael - samplers, synthesisers, guitars, bits of metal and plastic
Influences
Some random enthusiasms: City Centre Offices and Type Records, Alice Coltrane's Turiya and Ramakrishna, Hejira and the Hissing of Summer Lawns, Dollie Godfrey's upside-down cake, Women of the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Sooty and Sweep's Showband featuring Ramsbottom on Hammond, cellos on chillout tracks, mellotrons through space echos, rainsticks and vibraslaps.
The Only Michael has been recording and releasing his own electronic music under various names since the mid 1990s, and was a resident DJ at Sundaze (Sheffield) from 2001-2006.
He is proud to have been voted among the top 5 worst DJ names in DJ magazine (2002) and he has performed regularly at the Big Chill festival as well as at Boom (Portugal), Contact Europe (Austria) and at bars, clubs and multimedia venues throughout the UK.
Previous projects include Resolution and Feeler. Animat now takes up most of his time but he still manages the odd DJ set and some remixes in between tea breaks. In addition, he has collaborated with poets and writers including Chris Jones, Matt Black and Linda Lee Welch, producing soundtracks, soundscapes and collages to underpin the power of the spoken word.
He is a resident DJ at Sound of Lounge in Sheffield and a regular at London's Big Chill bar (check 'upcoming shows' for listings details) and has a monthly internet radio show on Purple Radio - www.purple-radio.co.uk
Thanks for finding me! I listened to the 'End of The Pier Show' and liked the continuous flute-like sound underneath the strings. My stuff was compared to a City Centre Offices artist by Future Music Mag in 2005, funnily enough.
God, your track is still on my page, that's quite a record for a trigger happy lass as myself, and i've just blogged that gig too..hope all is good.. xx
I've just added your Brighton Pier inspired tune to my page, it's knocked the Stereophonics off the hallowed top spot, hows that as contrast for you? : )This track really was extremely lovely live, am very pleased you have it on your page. x x
thanks for the add! how lush, the ever amazing end of the pier show. Either bottle the essence or create the mathematical formula and stun music lovers & critics for eternity.
p.s. urge you to do a remix of said tune. then can i add some vocals?!
nice to see you too x x
