It's 5am in Phoenix, Arizona - Warped Tour 2001. The world is still except for Dr. Rocco and Dr. Dynamite - they've just been kicked out of their makeshift laboratory (the last after-hours bar they could find) and are now in a back alley, confident that they are on the verge of one of their best discoveries ever. It's been a night of astute theoretical
discussion and mastermind contemplation. As they round the corner they
indeed stumble upon a grand discovery. Both of their tour buses have left!
In a flash Dr. Rocco and Dr. Dynamite morph back into their stage entities,
Todd Morse and Cone McCaslin. Todd tries to call his tour manager and the
other members of H20, Cone desperately dials his three faithful compadres
from Sum 41. Alas - no one will answer their calls. 293 miles, 6 hours and
32 minutes later - Todd and Cone emerge from a taxi to join their band mates
in Las Vegas, Nevada. They shake hands before they part, looking at each
other with an intense stare because they know that what happened the night
before will rear it's ugly head again. The doctors will make their rounds -
The Operation M.D. will be born! Ah yes... this smells like SCIENCE!
At least that's the story the two of them told me over drinks when I sat
down to interview them about the new side project they have on the go.
Outcasts amongst their peers, bass player Cone McCaslin and guitar player /
singer Todd Morse were destined to find each other and concoct the music
that makes them The Operation M.D. The music is not what you'd expect based on their pedigree. The songs on their debut album "We Have An Emergency" are a magnificent
blend of street-indie and pop. It's like The Violent Femmes getting beaten
up by The Hives and making friends with Tom Petty.
Credentials
Dr. Dynamite / Cone McCaslin:
The last member to join Sum 41, Cone McCaslin sealed their fate as a band greater than the sum of their parts. A self-made band, Sum 41 has established itself as one of the most successful pop punk acts, as witnessed by the trail of bands that have failed to
replicate their signature style. Their reputation for being hard working and
immensely creative has lead to collaborations with Motley Crue's Tommy Lee,
grandfather of Punk, Iggy Pop, rapper Ludacris as well as multi-talented
Jack Black to name a few. The band has toured the world for the past six
years, selling out stadiums and clubs. Sum 41 has inarguably made an
indelible mark within the industry, having sold millions of records, scored
..1 videos on MTV's coveted show TRL, topped the billboard charts and made
live performance appearances repeatedly on Saturday Night Live, The Tonight
Show with Jay Leno, The Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with
Conan O'Brien, Last Call with Carson Daly and MAD TV. Sum 41 are now recording their fifth studio album, due out in the Summer of 2007.
When asked what Dr. Dynamite thought of working and touring with Dr. Rocco
he said "Working with Todd is nearly impossible. We are definitely going to
need three buses. One for me, one for him and one for his ego. If it
weren't for MY genius we'd be screwed!"
Dr. Rocco / Todd Morse:
Forming H20 in 1995, Todd Morse is the guitarist, songwriter, backing vocalist and producer for the band. During the past 10 years with the band they have done four tours of duty with the Vans Warped Tour and shared the stage with Pennywise, Social Distortion, Rancid and NOFX to name a few. In 2003 he joined Juliette And The Licks as a songwriter,
guitarist and backing vocalist. He recorded their first record "Like A Bolt
Of Lightning" and recorded / co-produced their sophomore album "You're
Speaking My Language". Having toured the world with Juliette And The Licks,
Todd has played Reading / Leeds, the Fuji Rock Festival, X Games. They've
also garnered opening slots for the Foo Fighters, Queens Of The Stone Age
and Franz Ferdinand. Between H20 and Juliette And The Licks, Todd has made
his rounds of the talk shows, appearing on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,
The Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O'Brien and Last
Call with Carson Daly as well as the Blender sessions at the Sundance Film
Festival and the BBC in Ireland and TV Total in Germany. Juliette And The
Licks hits the road this year upon the release of their new album, 4 On The
Floor.
Over to you Dr. Rocco - what's it going to be like to work with Dr.
Dynamite? Dr. Rocco's reply - "Working with Cone is nearly impossible. We
are definitely going to need three buses. One for me, one for him and one
for his ego. If it weren't for MY genius we'd be screwed!"
There are no second opinions needed with this band. They're it. You're
gonna love it. Oh yes you will. The Operation M.D.'s debut album "We Have An Emergency" is Out Now! Watch for it and catch them on tour!
