   About The Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes
The name “Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes” is very unique among over eight hundred professional symphony orchestras in the nation. However, more significant is the community which supports our musical organization. Because of you, the Corning-Elmira Musical Arts, Inc., the parent institution of the OSFL, has been striving to better the lives of the Southern Tiers and beyond. I also applaud the passion and talent of the former conductor Marietta Cheng and the gifted musicians, the devoted board of trustees, and the skilled management staff. Therefore, I am honored to be selected as the new Music Director and Conductor of your orchestra, and I anticipate my first down beat with great excitement. If you have not attended our concerts before, then now is the time to catch the new OSFL sound at the Clemens Center and the Corning Museum of Glass. To our devoted audience, I am looking forward to become a new member of the community; now, let us begin our journey in becoming one of the most revered orchestras in the nation.

Toshiyuki Shimada
Music Director & Conductor

The Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes celebrated its tenth anniversary season in 2006.

The Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes is one of America's outstanding professional symphony orchestras. Drawing talented musicians from throughout the region to perform five concerts in Elmira and Corning, NY, the Orchestra fills the bill as the premier symphony orchestra in New York's Southern Tier.

The Orchestra is the principal ensemble of Corning-Elmira Musical Arts, Inc (CEMA), an organization that comprises more than 150 musicians and music lovers and sustains the region's only youth ensembles, the Youth Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes and the Junior String Ensemble, as well as an outstanding community chorus, the Chorus of the Southern Finger Lakes.

The Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes, a fully professional regional orchestra of the Southern Tier, provides inspiring performances of all the major orchestral repertory. The OSFL is a gem of the Southern Tier.

**************************

JOIN THE MOVEMENT … The excitement of last season's conductor search is undeniable. During the 2008-2009 concert season our single ticket sales tripled. We were able to provide concert experiences to more than 7,500 individuals living in the Twin Tiers and reached out to offer more than 2,500 educational experiences through the schools and our youth programs.

David Franks: Walkabouts Verse

Sep 17 2008 6:21 PM

(Just enjoyed my visit, Ruth.)

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this first poem sung on myspace.

Poem 162 of 230, walkaboutsverse. 741. com: TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001

Where traditions are not so rare;
Sea, country and works scent the air;
A multitude of monuments,
Planted tubs and patterned pavements.

The longish pedestrian malls;
The remnants of defensive walls;
"Broken-roofed buildings" are a gauge
Of the respect for heritage.

Wheat, rape and pines in the fields;
Estuaries guarded by shields;
Long sandy beaches and wide scenes;
Romantic-ruin go-betweens.

Rivers in parts licked by trees,
Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries,
And crossed by practical delights -
Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.

Fine churches headed at Durham;
Football kits ad infinitum;
Kept castles - one for study;
Masonry behind masonry.

And, with moulding-works out that way,
It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

(C) David Franks 2003

Poem 23 of 230, walkaboutsverse. 741. com: ABOVE EVEREST

When flying from Nepal to Thailand,
I was given a "good-side" seat;
And, as I looked out the plane window,
The view I saw was really neat.

For breaking through a thick sheet of cloud
Were the high Himalayan peaks;
And, rising the highest of them all,
Mount Everest - heaven bespeaks!
