Father Jack...."and Josef K, Orange Juice, the Go-Betweens, essentially the Postcard Records stable of bands, as well as early Primal Scream. One touchstone band for The Orchids was the Wake, which was on Factory Records and later Sarah Records as well....the influence of Madchester tends to leak in on UNHOLY SOUL....," George Killgoar for Gullbuy New Sound Review.
We've recently covered The Go-Betweens' "Magic in Here," in tribute to Grant McLennan, a great musician and a major influence on us and many others. Please visit Rare Victory to hear "Magic in Here" and some of the other songs in tribute to this timeless musician.

..The Orchids' biography by Alistair Fitchett, appearing on the sleeve notes of the LTM reissues, 2005:
A fair amount has been written about Sarah records in the past, most of it amounts to further mythologizing of a 'scene' that has really been counter-productive. I mean, myths and legends are central to the joys of Pop, but they do tend to cloud issues and often obscure great music. So it has been with Sarah, with a predilection amongst media and fans alike for painting the whole label as a home for quintessentially sad and sensitive indiekids in anoraks, crying at sunsets and cringing behind their fringes. Such a reading has certainly been detrimental to many of the bands who actually recorded records for the label, not least of whom would be The Orchids....

Slabs of the Tabernacle NYE Party @ La Cheetah Club (formerly The Twisted Wheel) 31/12/09
Mark du Mosch (Moustache Records - Rotterdam) Electrick Dragon LIVE (Rotterdam) Casionova (Cyber Dance Records, Magic Waves, IFM) Slabs of the Tabernacle DJs
Headlining the New Year party we welcome back Mark du Mosch. This will be his third time at Slabs so it's fair to say that we have much respect for the Rotterdam artist. An obsessive collector, Mark's DJ sets manage to be intriguing and hard rocking in equal measures, and we really couldn't think of anyone better to headline the New Year extravaganza.
Joining Mark will be fellow Rotterdamer Ricky the Dragon, performing a rare live set as Electrick Dragon. Having put out records dating right back to the early 90s (under many many aliases), Ricky carries with him some proper techno credentials. With his most recent output on Moustache Records he has produced two epic synth party bombs that are now firm favourites of ours. We first caught the Dragon live show at the Magic Waves festival earlier this year and it blew us all away, and so are delighted to welcome Ricky to Glasgow for his first Scottish performance.
And finally, making the trip up from Brighton will be the Italo battle axe Casionova. Over the past two years Casionova has become a permanent fixture at Slabs of the Tabernacle. His DJ sets are straight from the heart affairs and again we couldn't think of a better guest to see off 2009.
