SAVAGE FAMILY - savage from the root words salvaticus and salvage meaning "of the woods." HGS Higher Ground Struggle is a collective movement of Indigenous mc’s/lyricists and producers along with the many who have helped to establish the concepts and beliefs that drive our music. SAVAGE FAMILY / HGS are spread throughout the United Snakes primarily based out of the Northwest and the Midwest regions.
We are the people, the unwanted, the ignored, the marginalized and the forgotton. . We do not assume that one is any better than another and have come to the realization that as long as our communities are un healthy, we cannot consider ourselves to be health individuals regardless of what we have been able to achieve or accomplish. Until all are free, we are all imprisoned and we have committed ourselves to leave no one behind in our struggle for truth and recognition of our purpose to exist as human and spirit. The basis of the movement is to utilize traditional and contemporary wisdom of our Indigenous peoples for the means of empowerment. The lyrics represent a voice of Indigenous revolution for social change in communities that are plagued by the social ills created through colonization and genocide. SAVAGE FAMILY / HGS was not founded or established by one person or a particular group of people, instead the foundation of the SAVAGE FAMILY THEORIES OF (r)EVOLUTION movement is in our Indigenous brothers and sisters worldwide and the ideologies that have driven our peoples since time immemorial. The movement has embraced the art of lyricism and spoken word to be a useful means of spreading messages of hope, pride, and empowerment into our communities.

About 1966 or so, a NASA team doing work for the Apollo moon mission took the astronauts near Tuba City. There the terrain of the Navajo Reservation looks very much like the lunar surface. Among all the trucks and large vehicles were two large figures that were dressed in full lunar spacesuits.
Nearby a Navajo sheep herder and his son were watching the strange creatures walk about, occasionally being tended by other NASA personnel. The two Navajo people were noticed and approached by the NASA personnel. Since the man did not know English, his son asked him who the strange creatures were. The NASA people told them that they were just men that were getting ready to go to the moon. The man became very excited and asked if he could send a message to the moon with the astronauts.
The NASA personnel thought this was a great idea so they rustled up a tape recorder. After the man gave them his message, they asked his son to translate. His son would not.
Later, they tried a few more people on the reservation to translate and every person they asked would chuckle and then refuse to translate. Finally, with cash in hand someone translated the message, "Watch out for these guys, they come to take your land."

i obviously know it is way more than some hip hop/ rap group but i also havent heard any songs with sisters doin more than just a hook. you know actually spittin a verse or two...its all about balance right? And there are many and i mean MANY women who are walkin the red road and i know the strong sisters who walk with you and i personaly got all my kids at robinson into you brothers but i know some women and girls who are also askin the very same question. just thought it might do you well to know how some of the people are responding. with much love and respect. -Cat
