Ok, so I'm a BIG music geek and it's a character flaw I must live with. Also big into running (participating not watching) and college football (vice versa). I'm slowly turning into a serious movie buff (thanks NetFlix) and since I've got a decent side venture going right now with video production and editing, I'm trying to steal all the inspiration I can! I help out with the Dilworth UMC youth group and you couldn't ask for a better bunch of teenagers. And I still get out on the Charlotte bar scene (not as much as I used to, which is probably good) so buy me a Guinness and be my friend.
You wanna check out my (highly opinionated) taste? Here ya go: http://richpicks.blogspot.com
Music
How much time do you have?.... Radiohead, Dylan, Coltrane, Miles, Tom Waits, Jeff Buckley, Van Morrison, Damien Rice, Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon, Death Cab For Cutie/Postal Service, Arcade Fire, Brand New, U2, Springsteen, Coldplay, Josh Rouse, Wilco, Pearl Jam, Patty Griffin, Nina Simone, Johnny Cash, Richard Thompson, Counting Crows, The Clash, The Jam, Tool, nine inch nails, The Cure, Ben Folds, Ray Lamontange, Grant Lee Buffalo, Steely Dan, Ryan Adams/Whiskeytown, Prince, Otis Redding, Pink Floyd, Zeppelin.... And I probably remember more useless songs from the 80s than anyone you know.
Movies
I love Scorsese (Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, The Departed) and Kubrick (Clockwork Orange, Shining, Full Metal Jacket) while The Godfather I and II top my all-time list. Best new guys are David Fincher (Fight Club, Seven, Zodiac) and Chris Nolan (The Dark Knight, Memento, The Prestige). Best movie of 2008: THE DARK KNIGHT. Hands down. Best movies of 2007: No Country For Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Juno, Zodiac, Once, Gone Baby Gone, Into The Wild, The Simpsons Movie, and The Bourne Ultimatum. Then there's The Usual Suspects, Apocalypse Now, Pan's Labyrinth (best film of '06), the original Star Wars trilogy, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Say Anything, Almost Famous, Casablanca, Dog Day Afternoon, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, The Exorcist, Oldboy, Audition, Chasing Amy...
Television
The Wire may be the best show in the history of TV. Also really digging comedies like 30 Rock, The Office, How I Met Your Mother, and the brilliance that is The Daily Show and Colbert Report. Completely hooked on Mad Men, Lost and Friday Night Lights. (Yeah, TiVo will change your life.) And a big fan of old dumb comedy like the Electric Company and You Can't Do That On Television. Go figure.
Books
Recent stuff: "The Garden Of Last Days" (Andre Damus III), "Outliers" (Malcolm Gladwell), "World War Z" (Max Brooks), "Daemon" (Daniel Suarez)... I also love old Stephen King, Chuck Klosterman, Cormac McCarthy, and J.K. Rowling.
..Why grow up? Don't get me wrong... I AM a responsible adult who pays the mortgage on time, but I'm still a big goofball who hasn't had an office job in ages. Heck, I get paid to play music every weekend... What could be better? Music has always been my passion but be careful... I used to make a living writing about it, so if you're not careful I WILL talk your ears off....
On a personal level, I'm a bit of an exercise/health nut, but it could be worse... I COULD be insane like my triathalon friends. And while I go to church pretty regularly, that doesn't mean I've ever voted for George W. Bush. :^)
I'm on MySpace pretty regularly, but most of my friends are people I already know and/or cool bands. Sorry. But msg me if you want, ya never know...
