Originating from Boston, MA, Radio Active embodies the essence of hip hop. He is an emcee, beatboxer, writer, painter, and b-boy. He plays musical instruments, incorporates electronic beats with his beatbox and commands active audience participation during his fresh, soulful original live performances.
Innovative to the industry, Radio Active brings hip hop into other genres, a true crossover artist. An electrifying performer, Radio Active has toured extensively the past years throughout North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan as a member of the politically charged musical group Michael Franti & Spearhead to audiences in theaters and festivals upwards of 100,000 people and appearing on national television programs such as David Letterman, Craig Kilborne and on MTV with the critically acclaimed single/video “Rock The Nation.” Along the years, he’s shared the stage with artists such as Ani DiFranco, Common, Indigo Girls, KRS-One, String Cheese Incident, Roy Ayers, Talib Kweli, O.A.R., Karl Denson, Ben Harper, Keller Williams, Trey Anastasio, Jeru The Damaja, DJ Apollo, Jonah Sharp and Meshell N’Degeocello.
As featured in the ..ary films, “Breath Control” and “Freestyle, The Art Of Rhyme,” Radio Active has made a worldwide impact in this genre of beatboxing; the art of vocal percussion. This skill has translated into a new industry as a voice talent and you can hear Radio Active as announcer on two very popular video games, “Dance, Dance Revolution” and “Dance, Dance Revolution 2” as well as game announcer for the NBA’s Golden State Warriors on Fox Sports.
Radio Active’s new solo release; “Sleep or Sell,” mixed by D Sharp is a showcase of Radio Active’s diverse configurations and projects. He reveals himself in his first mixtape as a powerful emcee, topflight beatboxer and prolific poet. Alongside his solo tracks like the opener, “Wake Up”, Radio Active brings some of his favorite collaborations to the mixtape including “We Don’t Stop” with Michael Franti and Spearhead and the Gift of Gab, “Yes Mi Friends” with Nigerian Reggae Star Victor Essiet, “Discharge” and “Neva” with early Boston partners, Shuman and Delwin G. as well as cuts with Jahi, Subverse and Dave Shul. Song, beat, melody, rap, thought and emotion intertwine into the “Sleep or Sell” adventure with twenty-two tracks mixed by Quannum Recording Artist, D-Sharp.
Independent release, “BMMNM Vol 1, Breakbox,” is Radio Active’s self-produced first full-length beatbox record. Creating the beat vocally (with the aid of a pan flute or digeredoo on a few tracks) he uses a DL4 Line 6 sampling box, and layers and loops his beatbox rhythms and finishes with his vocals. The entire project, including lyrics, beats, production and artwork are by Radio Active. This is the first volume of a set, with slated future releases to include Voixbox and Songbox.
Visual art is another division of Radio Active’s creativity. As a multi-media artist, you can find his paintings and graph art hanging in galleries and sprayed on streets around the world. Radio Active employs live art into some of his performances, where he’ll paint a piece during his musical set. His mixed-media sets are another testament to his credit as a true crossover artist.
Radio Active’s musical journey has brought him across the globe from large stages, performing with internationally touring musical artists to the backstage alleys, free-styling with the locals. His influences are simplistic, “Both hip hop and the street were crucial in my music development, the street provided a large impact on my music and all outlets of my creative expression. The raw emotion and honesty of the street reveals itself without regret. Seeing other kids rapping, seeing what they feel, inspires me.”
Radio Active continues to expand his global musical journey and states, “I am looking forward to a continued pursuit of music experience, now grounded with an international perspective. I will stay active, learn and teach Hip Hop.” As a forward thinker, Radio Active knows 2007 is his year and with TIME Magazine’s “Person of the Year” to his credit, he is ready to shine.
