The Orphans are a country/bluegrass outfit comprised of two very talented individuals: Nick Payne and Lyn Taylor.

Both born in Australia, but with very different musical roots. Nick and Lyn have brought their unique experiences and abilities to produce the distinct sound and feel that is The Orphan's music.

Growing up on Sydney's North Shore, Nick cut his musical teeth as a teenager in a series of garage bands. However, as both he and his musical abilities matures, his tendency to seek out music of a "less mainstream" ilk saw him develop an appreciation, and then a profound respect for the simple yet soulful acoustic roots style of bluegrass and country. Inspired by artists such as Gillian Welch and Ryan Adams, he formed The Orphans in early 2006.

In stark contrast, Lyn's life unfolded against the backdrop of country Queensland. Literally the "truckers wife", Lyn draws on her experiences of trial, isolation and distance from loved ones as the basis of her song writing and haunting vocal style. Displaying a similar sense of "less is more", Lyn's approach dovetails neatly with Nick's to create music that has been described as, and is literally: "Simply enjoyable".

As The Orphans, Nick and Lyn have performed to audiences in both Queensland and New South Wales, and are currently based in their hometown of Sydney.

Greetings and salutations,

You and The Yearlings together, what a Saturday night. Y'all were wonderful, the addition of Mike really complemented your beautiful songs so well.

Oh, and it was so sad about yer guitar Lynnie, no Gibson deserves a fate such as that. But to your credit, you both pulled off a great performance.

Cheers

Wayne

Okay, that's the news I wanted to hear - that there would be more Orphanage sessions! Because I do love that venue. You should ask Danny Widdicombe if he's planning to come south anytime soon, because he'd be a good match for you guys.

May 24 2008 8:07 PM

Hi guys,

Sorry we had to leave early last night, my better half wasn't feeling better than much at all, she was feeling more than a little less than human. Having said that, from what I heard last night, you guys certainly have the goods re: songs and sound, Lyn, you have a wonderful voice m'dear and Nick, you're a mean foot tambourine player.

I'm really looking forward to next week with the Yearlings.

Cheers

Wayne
