  • Bio

Theo is a guitarist, singer-songwriter and composer from Amsterdam. He was born in Asten, Noord-Brabant, a rural area in the South of Holland with a good tradition of playing folk and roots music. Being influenced by American music, he has been playing guitar and been writing songs from an early age. He decided however to study classical guitar.....and survived. For some time he lived in Belgium, then moved to Amsterdam and has been working there as a composer and session player. He has played with Dutch legends like de Raggende Manne, Corrie van Binsbergen, Gerard van Maasakkers, and many others. You can hear him play guitar, banjo, mandolin on soundtracks like Ober (Alex van Warmerdam) How many Roads (Jos de Putter) He has toured and recorded with leading theatre groups such as Orkater and the Nationale Toneel. Today he enjoys playing guitar with two well-known Dutch acts Paulusma and Klerkx & The Secret. He also composes music for theatre, films, modern dance and documentaries. As a composer he mixes Americana with electronic and classical music. As a singer-songwriter he tries to make intuitieve songs He likes a good hook, and sticks to it. The result is modern-roots songs with echoes from Appalachia to psychedelic folk. His songs are short, and his lyrics vital. A personal non-narrative style is the biggest characteristic of his songs: an accumulation of images tell the story. His guitarplaying has influences of skillful pre blues styles and is both virtuose and functional. His emotional singing style delivers the lyrics at gut level. He has played at the Folkwoods Festival, Winterparade, Documenta, Flachland Festival and has opened for acts such as G-Love and the Hackensaw Boys. On his CD Until Grass, a southern expression meaning until better times, he plays almost all instruments himself. He also recorded and mixed the tracks and did the artwork. Making this album a very personal statement.Until Grass breaths musical moods from contemplation to ecstacy: from the haunting drive of A Roadsong, to the liquor induced mind flow of 12 Bar Blues; from the introversive love song Sunny Satellite to the gospel-like banjo song A Risen Man. Live he’s accompanied by young folk fiddler Judith Kolen. There is also a live band for a bigger stage, with Judith Kolen/fiddle, harmonium Jaco Bouwmeester/banjo,bass and Rob Kloet/drums.
