the songs on 'broken clocks' were conceived throughout 2006, a period i can only describe as the most personally challenging year of my life to date. i believe the songs transmit the fracturing, introspection, and eventual maturation i experienced during those countless solitary hours spent locked away in my bedroom with a guitar!
thankfully, the recording sessions for 'broken clocks' were a far less somber affair than the writing process was. waking up to a favorable combination of time, chance, and location, i had the great honor (and pleasure) of collaborating with a songwriter i admire a great deal by the name of Jacob Golden. Jacob guided and tracked these recordings throughout the month of February, '07, giving me a crash-course on his unique philosophy of music-making. we formed an enduring friendship and were jogging regularly until he flew off to the UK for a summer tour in support of his album "Revenge Songs," effectively taking over the world.
upon completing the record, the songs were sent away for mastering to the brilliant Kevin Hahn at Opal Studio in Portland, OR. meanwhile, i mailed a cdr with the title scribbled in sharpie to my aunt Shawn in Louisville to formulate the visual representation (otherwise known as an album cover). my dear accomplice, Jeremy of Allegra Gellar, who later wielded a paper cutter and box-blade with much precision, accompanied me to an art-supply store to help pick out the d.i.y. dressings.
so here it is: a focused glimpse into one life in 6.7 billion; a trying, coming-of-age novella; who can really say? i merely intend to write songs that i myself can connect with and enjoy listening to. with that as my yardstick for success, i think 'broken clocks' measures up quite well.
i saw the careless whisper video on my flight the other day. remember when videos told a story? i miss those days. this person's profile pic below me, makes me sea sick. hope you are well!
Yo G, Sorry to have been out of touch. Really looking forward to sharing a good strong Margarita with you soon in LA. Sending you good vibes from the old country. love, jg
Hey I'm not sure if i replied to you regarding the Mountjoy prison gig? so sorry if this is a bit late. I unfortunately didn't video my experience but i don't think any camera could have caught the atmosphere inside that room that day. Makes the gigs i do now seem a little easier for sure. I wanted to say that i've just listened to your songs and they're wonderful. Good luck with all you do. Lx
Really nice to see you and yours the other night! it's been too long, we need to hang out more my friend. Let me know when Broken Clocks hits itunes so i can tell everyone to go get it! be well brother, jg
