Barry's Interests
|
| General | The most obvious and prominent quality I have is my passion for music. I'm mostly into heavy metal, but before you click "back" because that doesn't sound interesting to you, hear me out. I like really UNUSUAL kinds of metal (and music in general). With metal, there is a lot more to it than just loud riffs and lots of screaming. Some of the best metal bands out there have vocals that never, ever scream! What makes metal interesting to me is what goes INTO this dark and powerful medium. If you look at my Music category, you'll probably not recognize the majority of the names listed; that is largely because I listen to the REALLY underground stuff, stuff that is unaffected by the mainstream, and thus is far more experimental and unusual. To me, heavy metal is a profound form of high art.
I'm also heavily into reading. Mostly thriller/horror fiction, but like with music, I'm picky. I always have a book going from room to room with me, but I'm a slow reader, and I frequently start a book but don't finish it (though I'm trying to get over that). And also like music, read the "Books" section for specifics.
I very, very occasionally like video games. I own a PS2, and I own about 20 games - but because I RARELY EVER PLAY THEM anymore, they tend to just sit there and collect dust. Although lately I've been playing DYNASTY WARRIORS 5: X-TREME LEGENDS a bit once again...it's easy and it's fun, what can I say?
Finally, I love film. I go to the movies as often as I can (which isn't very often, unfortunately), and I have quite a range of interest. And you guessed it: see the "Movies" section for more details.
If you want to know anything else about me, just ask. | | Music | Almost too much to list. I love metal, but it's not *all* I listen to. Metal for me is so much more than just the heaviness and screaming - heavy metal is a very profound art medium, often with very experimental and progressive creations. But then, I'm not all about metal, either.

Film - Composition - Screenwriting
|
I'm currently writing my first feature-length screenplay. It's an adaptation of a novel, and will likely be a miniseries. I had plans on attending Goddard College for my MFA, but since they don't "do" adaptations...well, for now I'm independent.

I write for Modern Fix, an independent magazine based in San Diego, CA. I've thus far interviewed the following bands: Sevendust, Thrice, Opeth, Ulver, The Gathering, and Exodus. My interviews and other works have appeared in the past two issues.

About me:
If you're a fan of the X-Files, or are even just someone who thinks it's stupid to release a movie EXCLUSIVELY on Blu-Ray (thus screwing everyone who doesn't have a player), then please sign my petition for Fox to bring 'The X-Files: Fight the Future' to 2-disc STANDARD DVD (and not just Blu-Ray)!

==And Now For Your Regular Profile==
I'm a 26-year-old born in Providence, RI. I'm currently enrolled in Goddard College's IMA program, where I'm focusing primarily upon screenwriting. I'm residing at home in southeastern Massachusetts. I work in a bookstore in Rhode Island, and I'm a published music journalist, and have interviewed over 15 bands, including Trivium, Sevendust, Thrice, Opeth, Ulver, Exodus, The Gathering, Agalloch, Nevermore, Devin Townsend/Strapping Young Lad, Bullets & Octane, Skyforger, Bohren & Der Club of Gore, ISIS, and Dimmu Borgir. I've also interviewed Joseph Citro, and have a forthcoming one with a bestselling author (to be published in my bookstore's newsletter, likely in the September issue). I also like cats, I love movies, and I love to read and listen to music.
For more of an idea of the kinds of music I listen to...

Who I'd like to meet:
Someone not motivated by cynicism, chance, or resignation. I just can't handle someone who thinks that if life pitches them bad things, then they're doomed to live badly. (And to any of you who think like that: LIFE CAN CHANGE - AND SO CAN YOU!)
Also, if you're the type who follows the media, lets the media decide what you should or shouldn't like, or otherwise shape your opinion around someone else's...let's just say I'm not as interested.
I would prefer to meet someone who loves movies. Preferably movies of all sorts - romantic comedies (aka "chick flicks"), horror, action, black-and-white Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers musicals, thrillers, murder mysteries...the works. You must love movies. Or at least really like them and be open-minded about what you see. (In other words, you'll see a movie regardless of what the general word-of-mouth is.)
You must also have a good appreciation for music - not just popular songs because they have a catchy melody. If metal ain't your dish, that's fine - but if you can appreciate the fact that I love metal because I think it's a profound form of high art, that's a good sign already. And please, don't say "everything" when I ask you what music you like! How hard is it to specify?
And finally, book time: I spend a good few hours spread throughout each day with my nose in a book. If you don't do that, at least be able to tolerate it...it'll happen a lot, trust me.
Finally, a message to the general public of MySpace: If you REALLY want to add me as a friend, and actually get to know me (unless we're already friends), READ this before you do anything else. I've been getting too many damn requests from girls who are FAR too good to be true - literally, and moreso, the bands. Oh, the damn BANDS...all sorts of different bands, musicians, and other people that only marginally might be of interest to me. Again: if we've talked, if we know each other, if we're long-lost friends...hell, if you just want to get to know me better, by all means, request away; but if you don't know me, SEND ME A MESSAGE FIRST. I am getting really annoyed having to hit the "Deny" button every single day. Grr.
Oh, and no conservative, right-wing, overly religious Republicans...I don't think I'll have much of a conversation with you if you fall into that category. Bigots, racists, and Nazis need not apply, either.
