Sounds Like
ARTS IN LEICESTERSHIRE -
"Leicester indie band the Pennyhangers is rapidly establishing itself as one of the leading indie bands in Leicester. The band's very solid set of modern indie songs is ably delivered by the fine vocals of front man James Percy and features the award winning drumming of Jonny Wells.
My prediction is that Pennyhangers is one of the Leicester bands most likely to be signed to a decent label in 2009."
A Penny Hang is noted as (Sailor's Slang) an establishment common in port cities, usually located in a cellar or basement. It featured hooks in the walls, with ropes strung in parallel from one side to another at about shoulder height. In the late evening, drunk and exhausted "clients" who had spent all their money, or were too fucking wasted to be allowed anywhere else would enter the penny hang, after paying a penny, they would then drape themselves over a rope, attempt to sleep as best they could. As a crowning flourish to the glories of this place, the proprietor would come down in the morning and untie one end of the rope so that the clientele who had not managed to wake up and stagger out already would collapse together in a heap on the floor.
Hi Hi Hi, hey thanks for linking up with The Boiler Club and we love the sounds and ideas coming from the depths of cyber space. Thank God for technology that’s what we say.
Myspace has enabled The Boiler Club: Unsigned Heroes, to listen to so much great music and link up with some great people who share our love and thoughts about live music and Djays who don’t play safe. Initially we were inspired by the do it yourself punk ethos and the late great John Peel and Joe Strummer.
We run a tiny tiny club just once a month and we have booked some so many fantastic bands through the Myspace medium.
So who are we? Well, we are two ole geezers (really) who are still out there spinning tiptop tunes and hosting a once a month night encouraging and supporting unsigned bands at Northampton’s legendary Labour Club.
Listen guys, love it and I see you are mates with The Midbeats, please ask them about us, anyways would you like a gig in April. That being the 10th with support from a duo called The Kirkland Turn. We don, t pay a lot but it is a great little club and we take 10% bar earnings to pay bands, beers for guest djays, PA sorted, flyers sorted, press, and if you send a demo or a track to the BBc weekender it would get played, let us know guys, peace and love, Ian and give my regards to The Midbeats
