A brief history:The Pennys were formed by Steven Kramer and 1970's über producer Kenny Kerner (Badfinger, KISS, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Ian Lloyd and the Stories, Steve Marriott, Dust, Jose Feliciano, etc). The pair had worked together from 1976 to 1979, in the pre-Menudo boy band; VIRGIN. Kramer and Kerner both had a love of '60's and '70's pop/rock; especially that of the British Invasion. The pair began writing songs together and soon developed an unusual ability to craft tunes that had a more than "familiar" air about them. "We set out to basically lift as many Beatle licks and chord patterns as possible, without crossing the seven note rule", says ex-Penny Steven Kramer. "Think of it as Spinal Tap meets The Rutles", Kramer continues. "The thing is; that at the time, we were deadly serious. We felt as though we could pay homage to our favorite band of all time, while simultaneously receiving endless inspiration from them. The music business was different in the late '70's and early '80's. There were star A&R men who really cared about and understood music. Kenny was able to get appointments with these guys, because of his status as a hit producer. He and I would actually walk into the offices of these guys; the head of A&R mind you; put a cassette in their decks, and sit there as they listened. Inevitably two things happened as they were listening: 1. They would ask us quite plainly if we were English or not, and 2. They would ask us who we thought we were. Apparently we had crossed some sacred line which in the end, only served to have us shown the door with a "Don't call us, we'll call you" attitude. The public however seemed to enjoy us quite a bit. We played tons of shows and were featured in several of the day's top teen mags. To be continued... |
