A late night in 2001, two brothers find a man lying in the gutter. He was bordering on unconsciousness, so they decided to help him home. The brothers were Jim and Lal Townsend and the man was John Brandham.
The home in question, "171", was a house for waifs and strays and where the embryonic stages of The People's Revolutionary Choir took place. Frequenters of the house were recruited as members; cue Roshan Moliko and Kris Feldmann.
Sitting around romanticising about the history of the Rolling Stones, the Small Faces, Velvet Underground, Bob Dylan and Gram Parsons, the band set about creating their trademark sound. Getting the early seal of approval from Jim Reid and Ben Lurie of Jesus and Mary Chain who produced their early demos, they went on to have their first single, "Elevate", produced by Brendan Lynch, collaborator of Primal Scream.
Having recently come back from an acclaimed European sell-out tour with The Brian Jonestown Massacre, for which they recruited guitarist Will Fowles, the band went straight into the studio to record their second single "The Breeze that Blows" with Brian O'Shaughnessy, out in April 2007.
The People’s Revolutionary Choir consist of;
Lal Townsend - Vocals
Jim Townsend - Guitar
John Brandham - Drum
Roshan Moliko - Bass
Kris Feldmann - Keys
Will ‘Sweet Willy’ Fowles - Guitar
“The Breeze That Blows” b/w “Lost And Found” is to be released on April 9th 2007 on 7”, limited to 1,000 copies, on Weekender Records.

Hello everyone, groovy times at Turning Worm Towers. Hope you are up for some racket / drinking based shenanigans because there are some fine opportunities for such this coming week. Tomorrow (Friday 22nd) we're having our second outing at Tommy Flynn's, 55 Camden High St. The last one went swimmingly with such talent as Mani & Little Barrie in the audience and a bunch of nutters on stage. Tomorrow features a headline set from DEMPSEY & THE DC9S who are flying in from New York for a couple of gigs. Here's what the Sunday Times had to say about them: "A strong blend of trip-hop, delta blues, urban funk and alt-country. Provides the perfect soundtrack to city life." - Dan Cairns.. In support we have .a band that so blew us away at T.S.A.T. a few weeks ago we had to get them back on A.S.A.P.-THE WUTARS. The ever-rocking EIGHTS N' ACES and the intricate melodies of MEATEYE & DILLON will keep us warm in the middle, while the glamorous indie-pop twins TALL POPPIES kick things off. Phew! The doors open at around 7.30pm, music from eight and a mere £5 to get in!
The on Sunday we've got an unmissable line up at THAT SUNDAY AFTERNOON THING at The World's End, Camden; in the shape of THE FOOL + THE PEOPLE'S REVOLUTIONARY CHOIR + DANNY AND THE CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD. |The fun starts around 5pm and it's FREE! If you're among the more organised on our mailing list you might like to visit ticketweb. co. uk and grab a £6 ticket for next Saturday's (1st March) gig at The Wilmington Arms, 69 Roseberry avenue, which involves THE DIRTY FEEL + THE DEBRETTS + THE PEOPLE'S REVOLUTIONARY CHOIR + MARRVEL. Whoa there, I think that's enough to be going on with. Hope to see you out there.
