“The Peoples’ Voice”, offering the public a forum to express themselves.
Activist Art Stevens of Harmony Coalition, Inc. created “The Peoples’ Voice”, a public freedom of speech outdoor venue in Santa Monica, CA, to symbolize Freedom of Speech, a pillar of democracy that is crumbling in many parts of the world. “The Peoples’ Voice” mirrors the historic “Speakers Corner” in London ’s Hyde Park where some of the most influential figures in world history have met. Like “Speakers Corner”, where tens of thousands visit every year, “The Peoples’ Voice” has no entry requirements, no class restrictions and no rules of formality.
On “Freedom of Speech Day”, hundreds will gather and speakers can bring a box to stand on and speak, a tradition that was established at “Speaker Corner” because people were not allowed to say anything critical on British soil about the queen. This day will mark the beginning of “The Peoples’ Voice” which has been established to create a place where people can gather and speak. Stevens says, “Most freedom of speech role models are no longer alive and there are so few models to carry on. ‘The Peoples’ Voice’ will revive our most fundamental need to freely express ourselves.”
