Ursprünglich aus Schrecksbach (bei Schwalmstadt/Hessen) waren The Petards in den 60er Jahren neben Bands wie "The Lords" oder "The Rattles" eine der erfolgreichsten und populärsten Bands der Beat-Aera in Deutschland.
Die Urformation der Petards bestand im Gründungsjahr 1966 aus Horst und Klaus Ebert, Rüdiger "Roger" Waldmann und Hans Jürgen Schreiber,der im Juni 1967 durch Arno Dittrich -zu damaligen Zeiten als bester Schlagzeuger Deutschlands gehandelt- ersetzt wurde. Arno versetzte mit seinen Soli die Zuhörer regelrecht in Trance. Sie gewannen mit ihm den Nachwuchswettbewerb des SWF. Damit konnten sie ihre erste LP »A Deeper Blue« einspielen. Ihre Singles »Shoot Me Up To The Moon« sowie der Nachfolger »Golden Glass« plazierten sich auf dem 1. Platz der Schlagerbörse des hr und der Hitparade im SWF.
Im Jahr 1968 wurde ihre zweite LP »Petards« mit dem Nr.1 Hit »Pretty Liza« veröffentlicht. In diesem Jahr produzierten sie mit ihrer Single »Misty Island« einen raffinierten Ohrwurm, der noch heute als Klassiker der Beat-Ära gilt. Sie tourten durch Deutschland und gaben einige Konzerte in der damaligen CSSR. Die Hallen waren ausgebucht, besonders die Fanclubs (bis zu 380) sorgten für die richtige Stimmung am Veranstaltungsort. In der Pop-Poll-Umfrage der Zeitschrift "Musikexpress" wurden sie zur "besten Nachwuchsgruppe" gewählt. Ihr Album erreichte in der Auswertung der "LP des Jahres" den 5. Platz.
Daneben produzierte die Gruppe noch unter Pseudonymen wie ZONK und FLITTERMOUSE Cover-LPs, z.B. mit Songs von Creedence Clearwater Revival. 1970 erschien Ihre dritte LP »Hitshock«. Auftritte im französischem Fernsehen und im "OLYMPIA" in Paris folgten. Ihre Single »Blue Fire Light« konnte sich unter den Top Ten der französischen und belgischen Charts plazieren. Ihre musikalische Vielseitigkeit zeigten die Jungs auch bei der Inszenierung eines Musicals (Shakespeare) am Theater der Hansestadt Bremen. Als Veranstalter des legendären »Burg Herzberg Festivals« begründete die Band eine Tradition, die bis heute fortwirkt. Zum Debüt 1970 kamen über 5000 Besucher, um die Stars des progressiven deutschen Rock von CAN über FRUMPY bis AMON DÜÜL II zu sehen.
Ende 1970 verabschiedeten sich die PETARDS von Klaus Ebert, der als Labelmanager nach Hamburg ging. Als Ersatz für Klaus suchte sich die Band aus 60 Bewerbern den Gitarristen Bernd Wippich heraus, der eine geniale "Hendrix-Gitarre" spielte. Das Doppelalbum "Pet-Arts" (Lieblingskünste) erschien Anfang 1971 als eines ihrer besten und kreativsten mit liebevoll ausgefeilten Songs wie »Baby Man« und »Good Good Donna«.
Am 4. März 1972 fand Arnos tausendster Auftritt statt. Ein halbes Jahr später, genau am 3. September 1972, packten die Petards ein letztes Mal im Western Saloon in Wiesbaden ihre Instrumente aus.
Dann folgten 30 Jahre Pause.
Im Frühjahr 2002 formierte Arno Dittrich die Petards in Kassel neu:
Arno Dittrich (Drums), Norbert Drews (Baß), Martin Großkurth (Orgel/Tasten), Uwe Müller (Gitarre), und Rolf Hellweg (Gesang).
Auch wieder mit dabei -als Backliner- ist Harald "Harry" Reichel, Arnos Roadie und sein alter ego seit den 60ern. Er betreut die Band vor, während und nach den Gigs.
Mit dieser Formation traten sie u.a. im Juni 2002 auf dem Herzberg-Festival auf.
Im Jahr 2003 erfolgte dann eine musikalisch begründete Umgruppierung.
Für Rolf Hellweg und Uwe Müller konnte Arno den Ex-Petard (und Ex-Randy Pie) Bernd Wippich gewinnen, der seinerseits Bernd Kühl -Gitarrist der Wolfgang-Petry-Band- aus München "mitbrachte".
Diese neue Band spielte mehrere Stadtfeste und -last but not least- am 15.11.2003 in Schrecksbach das "Tribute To The Petards"-Konzert.
Gleichzeitig wurde mit den Arbeiten an einer neuen Petards-CD -dank moderner Kommunikationstechnik an den Produktionsorten München und Kassel- begonnen. Sie wird sowohl alte (allerdings in neuem Gewand) als auch neue Titel enthalten.
Anfang Mai 2005 ergab sich eine erneute Umgruppierung:
Mick Brehmen ersetzte Norbert Drews.
Mick arbeitete u.a. mit Ken Hensley (Uriah Heep) und Chris de Burgh und spielte zusammen mit Bernd Kühl bei den "Trouble Boys".
Natürlich werden  weiter unermüdlich touren. ...und da werden wir hoffentlich auch Sie und dich wiedersehen....

1966 Horst Ebert, Klaus Ebert, (git. and voc.) Ruediger "Roger" Waldmann (bass) and Hans Juergen Schreiber (drums) were forming The Petards, Schreiber was replaced in June 1967 by Arno Dittrich, at that time known as best rock - drummer in Germany. Arno's famous drum soli soon became one of the highlights in the band's live performances. With him they won the SWF - New - Generation - Competition, which made it possible to record their first LP "A Deeper Blue". The singles "Shoot Me up To the Moon" as well as "Golden Glass" quickly got number one in HR and SWF hit parades
In the Year 1968 their second album "Petards" was released including another radio number one, "Pretty Liza". The very catchy "Misty Island", a single, produced in the same Year still ranks as a classical of the beat era.
Touring excessively throughout Germany, The Petards had been one of the first beat - bands playing behind the so called "Iron Curtain" with their successful concerts in the CSSR.
Particularly The Petards - fan clubs (up to 380) with their tremendous support were extremely helpful for the band's success and sold out venues over these Years. In the pop poll of "music express" magazine they were voted to be "Best group of new generations". On "Album of the Year” The Petards reached a 5th place
Besides that the group still produced, with aliases such as ZONK and FLITTERMOUSE, several Cover LPs, e.g. with songs of Creedence Clearwater Revival.
1970 their third Album "Hit shock" was released. Appearances on French television and in the "OLYMPIA" in Paris followed. Their single "Blue Fire Light" reached the Top Ten in France and Belgium. They showed their musical versatility also with the production of the musical “Wie es euch gefällt” (a free adoption of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night) at the Staatstheater Bremen. As the founder and organizer of the legendary "Burg Herzberg Festival" the band settled a tradition that still works today (note: After the second festival in 71 the band gave up planning another one. A decade later a group of musical agents took over the festivals name and installed it again nearby the original venue, of which it moved in 2004 to several other places.) The debut in 1970 had an audience of over 5000, who came to see the stars of the beginning Kraut – Rock scene such as CAN, FRUMPY and AMON DÜÜL II, just to name a few.
At the end of 1970 The PETARDS said good-bye to Klaus Ebert, who left the band to become head of the A&R department at LIBERTY RECORDS in Munich. As replacement for Klaus, Bernd Wippich, of whom they said he played an excellent "Hendrix - style guitar", was picked out of 60 applicants.
The double album "Pet-Arts" appeared at the beginning of 1971 as their best and most creative one with affectionately sophisticated Songs like "Baby Man" and "Good Good Donna". In March 4th, 1972 Arno’s thousandth performance took place. A few months later at the third of September, the Petards staged their instruments for their last gig at the “Western Saloon” in Wiesbaden.
30 Years later.
In spring 2002 Arno Dittrich planned and fixed the Petards reunion in Kassel with Arno Dittrich (drums), Norbert Drews (bass), Martin Grosskurth (organ/keys), Uwe Mueller (guitar), and Rolf Hellweg (vocals).
Also on board again -as back liner- is Harald "Harry" Reichel, Arno’s roadie and his "alter ego" since the 60ies. He takes cares for the band before, during and after the gigs.
They had their first reunion performance in June 2002 at the Herzberg-festival. 2003 Rolf Hellweg and Uwe Mueller were replaced. Arno could win the ex-Petard (and ex-Randy Pie) Bernd Wippich, who brought along Bernd Kühl, guitarist in the “Wolfgang Petry Band”.
This new band played several village fairs - and last but not least- on 11.15.2003 in Schrecksbach the "Tributes to the Petards"-concert. At the same time they started working on a new Petards CD It will contain both old (however with a facelift) and new titles.
At the beginning of May 2005 Mick Brehmen replaced Norbert Drews.
Mick worked among others with Ken Hensley (Uriah Heep), Chris de Burgh and played together with Bernd Kühl in the band "Trouble Boys".
will continue touring unremittingly.
