My name is Josh Hedlund. I've been playing the piano for nine years and the guitar for about three years. God has gifted me in playing and in writing music. It is something that I love to do.
About the Songs
"To Whom It May Concern" is an interpretation/cover of the final track on Underoath's great album, Define the Great Line. It is a beautiful hardcore song that transfers well to piano. I intend to cover the entire album in time.
I did not set out to write "Flight of the Hummingbird." I was trying yet again to figure out the intro to Vanessa Carlton's "A Thousand Miles," got bored and started improvising on its quick low-high-low-high pattern, and came up with something that sounds cool. Some of the chord structure is similar to "Dreams of Melancholy," but it's a lot more intense. It is also influenced by The Fray's "Little House" and Bach's "Toccata in D minor."
"Dreams of Melancholy" began as a track for my school's theatrical production of Little Women in spring 2005. One of Beth's sisters---I disremember which, although I would guess Jo---asks her to play on the piano the saddest song she knows. It lasted just over a minute, but over the next few months I was inspired and added a couple more sequences to make it a three-minute piece. This "final" version is what appears here. Although it originated as a "sad" song, it can also be taken as a simple "happy" dreamy song. Everyone seems to like it.
About the Equipment
I record with a very nice KORG Triton keyboard hooked up to Garrett Kempf's very nice Mac with Garage Band.
The last two tracks were recorded with a simple voice recorder feature on my portable MP3 player, the iRiver H10 20GB, and will soon be redone with better, direct quality.
Thanks, for "Give". Not only did I detect a Ben Folds influence (via his more sincere songs like "Gone", "Late", "Landed" & "Still Fighting It", but sometimes I do need to be reminded not to give out or give up. You read my mind, Josh.
P.S. Your parodies on AmIRight are a riot, too. I never would have guessed "Howard Dean" for "Billie Jean"!
why thank you mr. piano man. good stuff here. we need to bring the piano back and get rid of the stupid electric guitar. except im learning electric guitar, so in a few months i will regret saying that. anyways. have a nice night.
