> A POEM FOR CANCER SURVIVORS!
Victim or Survivor?
Being a Victim is a state of body. Being a Survivor is a state of mind.
A Victim fears their hair falling out from chemotherapy. A Survivor knows bald is beautiful.
A Victim knows about feeling down. A Survivor knows feeling down is okay.
A Victim is amazed at all the tears. A Survivor never leaves home without Kleenex.
A Victim goes to 'see' a doctor. A Survivor 'consults' with his or her physician.
A Victim gets caught in despair. A Survivor prays a lot.
A Victim feels helpless. A Survivor says 'thanks' with dignity and grace.
A Victim enjoys a good laugh. A Survivor LOVES one.
From the moment we are diagnosed with cancer, we are victims.
We must CHOOSE to be SURVIVORS.

In Dec. Of 2003 I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. While I was going through the necessary treatment, I was determined to find out "Why Me?"...until I was shocked at the reality of the facts:
1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer between the ages of 45 and 55.
I was 49...and determined to find a way to let others know that there is "better news"...that 85% of those women will survive IF they are diagnosed early enough and provided proper treatment for their cancer.
I had to find a way to tell the world in my own way.
One day while searching on line, I saw an artist'srendering of a tiny little pink and white camper in a field. It was then that I remembered all of my camping days with my family and how, in my youth, hundreds of families like ours, camped in those "Canned Ham Shaped Orbs".
I became determined to find an old camper, fix it up, and attend camping and Breast Cancer Awareness events accross the US to tell women like me about the statistics. There were many obstacles. Having no Health Insurance, my diagnosis had left the family budget bankrupt...but I was determined to make it Happen!
We located our first "Rescue" Trailer right here in San Antonio, Texas in the back yard of a Breast Cancer Patient...but after tearing her down, we found her to rotten to restore. Our second trailercame all the way from California...and what ever she was missing...we took from Trailer #ONE...We MORPHED the two!
Because of an Army Of Angels...We have Wings!
We stripped off every inch of the ugly yellow paint that covered the beautiful Birch Panneling...repaired rotten wood and fixed windows and wiring. The Floor was replaced by O'Krent Floors and Wilsonart. Shiny new trim was donated by Vintage Trailer Supply and Retro Restoration. A new Frig. was donated by Dometic and a stove by Ancira RV. Andrew's Upolstery replaced our dinette seat covers with Pink Naugahyde donated by the Naugahyde Company. Wilsonart donated the beautiful Pink Rose Pattern countertops and Capitoline built them for us. The Paint Stripper for the out side was donated by Eldorado and Pro-Care Collision of San Antonio gave us a shiny new coat of Pink and White paint.
Employees of these companies were so helpful in making our dream a reality as we all worked together to give the "Pink Winged Warrior" her Wings.
It has taken two years and the patience, love, elbow grease, and support of my entire family to complete her. For their love, and the love of the strangers who became friends in this Mission, I will be forever grateful.
She will carry their names and the story of her re-birth as she travels down the road forever.
I will carry their Love and Support, and the stories they shared of the way Breast Cancer has effected their lives in my heart forever.
People ask me all the time, "Why did you really do this?"
My answer to them is simple...What else could I have done? I am not a Doctor, Chemist, or Surgeon. I know nothing about Chemo or Radiation except how it feels to receive it...I do not have millions or even hundreds of dollars to get this information to the next family it is likely to effect. So I will do it my way ...in a Little Pink Travel Trailer, and effect as many people as I can. I hope you can share in the joy of the journey with me.
Pink Huggs!
