Where to start... well, I think all songwriting begins and ends with Bob Dylan, and until someone else writes a line like, "ghosts and 'lectrcity howl through the bones of her face," then I'll maintain this stance. Smokey Robinson is sorely underrated as a songwriter, as is Otis Redding--""My Girl" and "Respect" just scratch the surface of these immaculately assembled catalogues--Otis Redding has the greatest voice EVER, you can have Marvin Gaye, Freddy Mecury, and Thom Yorke--the Otis abides, do yourself a favor and listen to “That’s What My Heart Needs” and you’ll see why. I love Michael Stipe’s lyrics, they are the most literate collection of words other than Dylan, and the fact that he mumbles a lot of them is a study in never taking yourself too seriously as a songwriter. Steven Malkmus' songwriting sensibilities are probably my favorite of all, and "Fillmore Jive" not only is my favorite song, but it also contains the most emotive and beautiful and best and triumphant and tragic and... guitar solo EVER. Robert Pollard could have written a great song in any era. He along with Elvis Costello understands pop music on a level unparalleled by any others, and not by coincidence the two have about a BILLION songs between them. Paul Westerberg seems to touch emotions in songs without much apparent effort. You just get the feeling he rolled out of bed, killed a case of beer and banged out "Androgynous" on the first take--that sense of spontaneity is sorely lacking rock music today. Jeff Tweedy is infinitely appealing. He could record himself shitting and I'd put it on a mix tape. I not only love his music, but I want him to design and decorate my house. The Flaming Lips have become as indispensable to me as Pavement and Wilco--I would buy anything they release without listening to it first because I know I'd love it or learn to love it. So there you have it, a list not littered with obscure bands that some people like to reference ad infinitum, but an honest assessment of what moves me as far as songwriting is concerned... Oh and I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I’m equally influenced by classic rock as I am by anything that’s happened since, The Stones, Neil Young, The Beach Boys, etc… have as much to do with what I write as Pavement, Wilco, or GBV.
My Favorite Albums:
5. Deserter Songs
4. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
3. Automatic for the People
2. The Unforgettable Fire
1. Whatever Pavement record I happen to be listening to…

BOSTON METRO--Luke O'Neil--Imagine, if you will, the mid-tempo, wistful, hand-dog rock all over contemporary radio if it were made by an ACTUAL ROCK BAND. A band who weren't, you know, total wusses. That's what you've got in "SHORT RIDE," the new song from Boston's The Plain Janes. In other words, ther's no reason why a million girls shouldn't be breaking up with their boyfriends to this band's music. "SHORELINER," another song available on the Janes website, is a punchier side of the band. Think BOWIE'S "Heroes," covered by COLDPLAY.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------NE PERFORMER--Although theyve only been together for six months and played a handful of shows, the Plain Janes clearly are no rookies. Former Sheila Divine bassist Jim Gilbert and his Plain Janes bandmates have attacked the scene with ferocity, showing that theyre here to make an impact. Their sound demonstrates heavy Echo and the Bunnymen and the Cure influences. Lead singer Greg Brittons soaring vocals are forceful and passionate. Their strong guitar-and-keyboard-driven rock lead down a path to the not-yet-forgotten Boston rock scene of the 90s. The band blended well to produce a set that was intense and passionate all the way through. They have some very catchy tunes and didnt feel the need to drop the tempo at any point. Going on first, the Plain Janes left a room of people wondering how their performance could be topped. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------MUSIC CHERRY--Sometimes it pays to listen to the radio late at night. Its the best place to hear fresh, new music that does not have the heavy marketing teams that pay to have it played incessantly during the day. Last night, as I was flipping through the dial, WFNX featured The Plain Janes. It sounded like real music. The songs have a great purity to them in their EP format, without the heavy studio glossinga mix of early Radiohead and Smashing Pumpkins, if you will. Four of their songs, including Best Years and Sublunary which I heard last night, are featured on the new Lunch Records 4X4 Volume 2 (a compilation that featuresyou guessed itfour songs from four up-and-coming bands). Im sure youll be hitting repeat from the few songs available and youll be crossing your fingers hoping for an entire album from these guys soon. Word is that they also play a great live show. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------THE APOCALYPSE--The guitars are shimmery, the pop epics are sprawling, and they're the first band tonight to remind me of The Chameleons UK.
