About me: I was sitting at home listening to some Gil Scott Heron, his words had moved me and I started feeling that there really isn't enough spoken word nights going on out there.
All I knew was that there is this big foundation called Apples & Snakes which a lot of the big poets (Michael Rosen through to Ty) have done work with. As I continued my venture into this unknown world I put on my first event in July 2007. The response to this show, that consisted of Miss Higher, Froggy Digital, Apocraphe, Will Stopha and Under Da Poetree had made me and everyone else in that room inspired with thought, happiness and laughter.
From that moment I believed it to be important to create more events so that, people can share in these insightful stories of different people's perspective and be inspired by creative thought to think creatively. It was at that first event that my friend Tania Rufus expressed her interest in getting involved with creating 'The Poet's Lounge' as somewhere you can trust to hear something that will inspire you.
The idea is to put spoken word artists and poets on a mainstream stage. We are always on the look out for conscious minded poets and artists.
Due to organisational problems at the Proud the event was moved to the Inspiral Lounge down the road. It was a great setting to the festivities of the evening. Opening with AirKlipz followed by Poetic 3dom and Alex Quest, the night kicked into lightspeed and we had only got started. To keep the tempo going and even kicking it up a notch Jasmine Cooray and Will Stopha delivered faantastic performances. To cap off this inspiring night and sending us way off into the atmosphere with his beats, then grounding us with thought provoking words Charlie Dark provided one of the most memorable performances at The Poet's Lounge.
