Book: The Politics of Immigration's Blurbs
About me:
"The Politics of Immigration: Questions and Answers" is a new book out on Monthly Review Press, written by Jane Guskin and David L. Wilson, which responds to anti-immigrant myths with solid arguments and facts. To order online, see http://monthlyreview.org/politicsofimmigration.htm Our book website, with links to resources and other info, is www.thepoliticsofimmigration.org For announcements of upcoming book-related events, see http://thepoliticsofimmigration.blogspot.com (sorry, you have to cut and paste the link; myspace automatically blocks all links to blogspot and certain other sites)

About the book:

In the spring of 2006, millions of immigrants and supporters organized in cities and small towns across the United States to defend their rights following the passage of HR4437, a bill designed to punish unauthorized immigrants. In an unprecedented show of force, tens of thousands of workers marched out of meatpacking plants, factories, restaurants, landscape businesses and stores, while students—many of them the US-born children of immigrants—staged school walkouts. Thousands also observed a one-day national consumer boycott to demonstrate the economic power of immigrant communities.

The spring 2006 mobilizations—and the ensuing backlash from anti-immigrant sectors—pushed the topic of immigration to the front and center of U.S. politics. Polls show the public increasingly divided, with the debate framed as a choice between “deport them all” and “give everyone amnesty.” But dialogue is possible when we dig deeper. Why are people leaving their homes? Why are they coming here? What is the impact of our current enforcement policies? What kinds of alternatives exist?

Backed with a wide range of cited sources, The Politics of Immigration tackles questions and concerns about immigration with compelling arguments and hard facts, laid out in straightforward language and an accessible question?and?answer format.

For immigrants and supporters, the book is an effective tool to confront common myths and disinformation. For teachers, it provides a useful framework on the current debate, and ample opportunities for students to reach out and explore the intersecting issues.

Those who believe immigrants steal jobs from citizens, drive down wages, strain public services, and threaten our culture will find such assumptions challenged here, while people who are undecided about immigration will find the solid data and clear reasoning they need to develop an informed opinion.

About the authors:

JANE GUSKIN and DAVID L. WILSON are the co-editors of Weekly News Update on the Americas, an English-language bulletin covering grassroots news from Latin America. Guskin also edits Immigration News Briefs. Guskin produced a widely circulated immigrant rights flier entitled “What's So Wrong About Immigration?” Her essay “The Case for Open Borders” was published in Melting Point or Boiling Point? The Issues of Immigration. Wilson’s articles on Latin American issues have appeared in publications including Monthly Review, Extra!, and New York’s El Diario-La Prensa.

What others are saying about the book:

“We desperately need to put aside false information about immigrants, to see them as we see ourselves with honesty and compassion. This book gives powerful meaning to the slogan ‘No Human Being is Illegal.’ I hope it will be widely read.”

—Howard Zinn, author of A People’s History of the United States

“As the immigrant rights movement grows in size and energy, we need quick facts and deep history. This book gives us both.”

— Aarti Shahani, co-founder, Families for Freedom

“Guskin and Wilson have identified the hot-button points in the national immigration debate, and have set out to undo the stereotypes, misinformation and prejudice that paralyze rational thought on the subject. This book is a great reality check, a good teaching tool, and a powerful weapon against racism.”

—David Bacon, author of Communities Without Borders: Images and Voices from the World of Migration

Protest Italian right-wing mis-use of Indigenous peoples

It has come to our attention that the right-wing/fascist forces in Italy have come out with an anti-immigrant campaign, making use of (without permission) of an image of indigenous peoples/american indian/first nations/aboriginal person by misusing the analogy of what happened to native peoples with european settlement in the Americas.

While it is true that the indigenous peoples of the Americas were negatively impacted by the European colonization, it was not because they were "foreigners", it was because they came to subjagate us who had welcomed them initially with open arms. We identify with all those oppressed by colonialism/imperialism; and a major reason for immigration to Europe and North America is because the capitalist-imperialist powers (EU, US. et. al) have exploited and oppressed both the peoples and the countries of the third world. Those who immigrate to Europe and North America simply are trying to survive; a basic universal human right, and should not be attacked for it, but should be allied with, to end capitalist-imperialist oppression.

Yes to Indigenous Sovereignty, Yes to Immigrant Rights
No Human Being Is Illegal; To end poverty, end capitalist-imperialist oppression.

We've now had 5 years of lies about 9/11, WMD's, and freedom. The real reasons were oil, profiteering, and fascism. Not just Bush, but the news media, most of congress, and all who remain silent. And now they'll use fear to quash dissent. It's nothing new -- it's been going on for ages. War, poverty, ecocide, arrogant bullying --they're all from greed and fear, which come from ignorance. ♥ But it's not too late -- we can still learn to make peace. Talk with people. Love, Eric

NACLA and the NYC Friends of the MST invite you to...

A REPORT BACK ON THE FIFTH NATIONAL CONGRESS OF THE MST

with special guest JUAN REARDON, former FMST National Coordinator

Wednesday, November 14, 2007 from 7-9pm at CUNY Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Ave, New York, NY (Room 5414)

We will take this opportunity to hear from Juan who participated in the Landless Workers Movement 5th National Congress in Summer 2007. He will share with us the analysis and outcomes discussed by the over 17,500 MST delegates at the weeklong Congress, including plans for future MST work and their demands for a new Agrarian Reform Model that includes the expropriation of lands held by multinational agribusiness corporations.

Now is an urgent moment for MST supporters to come together and figure out ways to continue to support the work of the MST on the ground. FMST-NY will be hosting an MST activist in December of this year, and plans are already underway for an important series of events. Join us as we work to solidify the NYC chapter and plan our next steps.
